About these tools

These tools check that a piece of hardware is working, using only the browser. They cover input devices - keyboard and mouse - as well as camera, microphone, speakers, and the screen itself.

They are most useful for two situations: diagnosing whether a fault is hardware or software, and checking second-hand equipment before you commit to buying it.

How to choose

Open the test for the device in question and follow the on-screen prompts. For the camera and microphone tests the browser will ask permission first - that is the browser asking, and you can decline.

Frequently asked questions

Is my camera or microphone recorded?

No. The webcam and microphone tests show you a live preview so you can confirm the device works. Nothing is recorded, saved or transmitted.

What is a dead pixel test?

It fills the screen with solid colours in turn. A pixel that stays black on every colour is dead; one stuck on a single colour is a stuck pixel. Looking at solid fields makes either easy to spot.

My key does not register - is the keyboard broken?

Not necessarily. The test shows what the browser receives, so a key that does not appear may be faulty, intercepted by the operating system, or remapped. Trying the same key in another application helps tell those apart.
