Home, Construction & Energy Tools
Fifteen calculators for home projects and energy: solar output, battery runtime, inverter and generator sizing, AC tonnage and BTU, appliance energy use, tanks and rainwater, flooring, wallpaper, bricks, mortar, stairs and roof pitch.
About these tools
These calculators turn measurements into quantities and sizes you can take to a supplier: boxes of flooring, rolls of wallpaper, bricks and bags of cement, the kW of an inverter or the tons of an air conditioner. Each one shows the formula, the allowance it adds for waste or losses, and the assumptions you can change.
They are planning estimates. Electrical, structural and gas work is governed by local codes and must be signed off by a qualified professional; the pages say where a rule of thumb stops. No live weather or tariff data is used - you enter sun hours, rainfall and prices yourself.

All Home, Construction & Energy Tools
- Solar Panel Output Calculator Estimate the energy a solar array produces from panel wattage and count, peak sun hours you enter, tilt and shading losses and inverter efficiency, and how many panels a target usage needs.
- Battery Backup Runtime Calculator Calculate how long a battery bank or UPS will run a load from amp-hours or watt-hours, voltage, usable depth of discharge, inverter efficiency and battery chemistry, or the capacity a runtime needs.
- Inverter Size Calculator Size an inverter from the appliances you will run at once: running watts, motor start-up surge, power factor and a safety margin, with the VA rating and a warning for loads that exceed common sizes.
- Generator Size Calculator Work out the generator size for the loads you need: running and starting watts per appliance, the largest motor start, altitude and temperature derating, and fuel use at typical load.
- Air Conditioner Tonnage Calculator Estimate air conditioner size in tons and BTU/h from room dimensions, climate, sun exposure, insulation, occupants and appliances, with the heat-load breakdown and the nearest standard unit sizes.
- Room BTU Calculator Calculate the heating or cooling BTU a room needs from its dimensions, insulation, windows and climate, converted to kW and watts, for sizing heaters, air conditioners and heat pumps.
- Home Energy Usage Estimator Estimate household electricity use appliance by appliance - watts x hours x days x duty cycle, plus standby draw - and see each appliance's kWh, share of the total and cost at your tariff.
- Water Tank Capacity Calculator Calculate the volume of rectangular, cylindrical (vertical or horizontal), conical and capsule tanks in litres, US and imperial gallons, and the volume at a given fill height.
- Rainwater Harvesting Calculator Estimate how much rainwater a roof can collect from catchment area, monthly rainfall you enter and runoff coefficient, then size the storage tank against your monthly demand.
- Flooring Material Calculator Work out how many boxes of laminate, vinyl or engineered wood plank flooring to buy from room areas and coverage per box, with waste for straight, diagonal and herringbone laying and underlay rolls.
- Wallpaper Roll Calculator Calculate wallpaper rolls from wall widths and height, roll width and length, pattern repeat and match type, minus doors and windows, with the drop count per roll and a spare-roll allowance.
- Brick Quantity Calculator Calculate the bricks or blocks for a wall from its length, height and thickness, brick size and mortar joint, minus openings, with wastage and the mortar volume the joints need.
- Cement and Sand Ratio Calculator Convert a mortar or plaster mix such as 1:4 or 1:6 into cement bags and sand volume for brickwork or plastering, using the dry-volume factor, bag size and your wall area and thickness.
- Staircase Calculator Design a straight staircase from total rise and available run: number and height of risers, tread depth, stringer length, angle and headroom, checked against common building-code limits.
- Roof Pitch Calculator Convert roof pitch between rise-over-run, degrees and percentage, and calculate rafter length, roof area from footprint and overhang, and the number of roofing squares or sheets.
