Desktop, web and variable fonts

The same design is usually offered in several formats. Pick the one that matches where you will use it.

Desktop: TTF or OTF

Install on Windows or macOS for documents, slides and design software. TTF has the broadest support; install one format, not both.

Web: WOFF2

A compressed format for websites. You host it with your site and load it with CSS; it is not installed on a computer.

Variable

One file that holds a whole range of a design axis, such as weight. Use it where your app or browser supports variable fonts.

Desktop fonts (TTF and OTF)

Install these on Windows or macOS to use a family in word processors, design tools and presentation software. TTF has the broadest application support. OTF contains the same design with PostScript outlines; install one format or the other, not both.

Web fonts (WOFF2)

WOFF2 is a compressed format made for websites. It is not installed on a computer: you host the file with your site and load it with CSS @font-face.

Variable fonts

A variable font holds a continuous range of a design axis, such as weight, in one file. Applications and browsers that support variable fonts can use any value in the range. Where an application does not, use the static styles instead.

Installation and licensing

Installing a font

Download the files you need rather than the whole package when you only need one format. On Windows, extract the ZIP first, then right-click a font file and choose Install. On macOS, open the font file and choose Install Font in Font Book. Restart open applications so they see the new font. A ZIP archive itself cannot be installed directly.

Licences

Each release carries its own licence, shown on the family page for that exact version. Read it before you use or share the files: a beta or evaluation licence can be far narrower than a final release, and permission for personal use is not permission for commercial use.

Questions

Do I need an account to download a font?

No. When a release is published for public download, its files are direct downloads: no sign-in, no countdown and no advertising.

Which file should I download?

For desktop applications, start with the static TTF files. Choose OTF only if your workflow prefers it, and do not install both formats of the same style. Use WOFF2 files for websites. Choose the variable font when your application supports variable fonts.

Can I use these fonts in commercial work?

That depends on the licence of the specific release, which is shown on each family page. Beta and evaluation licences may not allow commercial use or redistribution, so check the terms for the version you download.

Does the font tester send my text anywhere?

No. Text you type into a tester stays in your browser. It is not saved, not sent to our server, and these pages load no session recording or advertising scripts.

Why are old versions still listed?

Each version keeps its own files, licence and checksums, so you can always download exactly the version you tested or used in a project. A withdrawn version is no longer downloadable.
