What is the difference between a metric ton, a short ton and a long ton?

A metric ton is 1,000 kilograms. A short ton, used mainly in the United States, is 2,000 pounds - about 907 kilograms. A long ton, used historically in the UK, is 2,240 pounds - about 1,016 kilograms. Each has its own converter here.

Is weight the same as mass?

In everyday use the terms are used interchangeably, and these converters follow that convention. Strictly, mass is the quantity of matter and weight is the force gravity exerts on it, but for converting between grams, pounds and kilograms the distinction does not change the arithmetic.
