Why a background image needs resizing first
Zoom (and most video call software) recommends a 1920x1080, 16:9 background image. Upload something a different shape and the platform crops or stretches it itself, on its own terms - a portrait photo gets its sides cut off, or a square logo gets visibly squashed. Resizing it correctly first means what you see here is what will actually show on the call.
Two ways to fit the shape
Fill (crop to fit) scales the image up until it covers the full 1920x1080 frame, then crops the overhang evenly from the longer axis - no letterboxing, but content near the edges of a very differently-shaped source image may be trimmed off. Fit (pad to fit) scales the image down until it fits entirely inside the frame, then pads the remaining space with a chosen background colour - nothing from the original image is lost, at the cost of visible bars on one axis.
