How it works
The Social Protection Law issued by Royal Decree 52 of 2023 replaced Oman's old social insurance system from 1 January 2024 and phases in its branches over several years; Royal Decree 60 of 2025 moved some start dates. For Omanis, the old-age, disability and death branch takes 7.5% from the worker and 11% from the employer, and work injury another 1% from the employer, both on the gross wage up to the OMR 3,000 monthly ceiling in Article 52; job security adds 0.5% from each side on the full wage. The maternity branch (1%, employer) started on 19 July 2024 and the sick and unusual leave branch (1%, employer) on 19 July 2026, both for Omanis and expatriates, on the full gross wage. Expatriates join the work-injury branch only from 19 July 2028. The savings system that will replace the expatriate gratuity - 9% of basic wage - is left out until the Fund's board fixes its start. Choose the month and the widget applies only the branches in force then.
Calculation method
- Contribution wage = gross wage; old age and injury capped at OMR 3,000
- Omanis: old age 7.5% + 11%; injury 1%; job security 0.5% + 0.5%
- All workers: maternity 1% from 19 Jul 2024; sick leave 1% from 19 Jul 2026
- Each branch counted only from its start date; amounts to the baisa

Questions
How much are social protection contributions for Omanis?
From 19 July 2026: 8% from the worker (7.5% old age + 0.5% job security) and 14.5% from the employer (11% + 1% injury + 0.5% + 1% maternity + 1% sick leave). OMR 1,000 gross gives OMR 80 and OMR 145.
Do expatriates pay social protection contributions in Oman?
Not from their own salary. Employers pay 1% maternity (since July 2024) and 1% sick leave (since July 2026); work injury is added from July 2028 and the 9% savings scheme once the Fund sets its start.
Is there a ceiling on contributions?
Yes, OMR 3,000 a month - but only for the old-age and work-injury branches (Social Protection Law Article 52). Job security, maternity and sick leave use the full gross wage.
When are contributions due?
By the 15th of the following month (Article 58).
What happens if an employer pays the savings contributions late?
Once the savings system starts, late contributions attract an extra 8% a year, cumulative (Executive Regulation Article 102), and savings earn a guaranteed minimum return of 2% a year (Article 104).
When is an expatriate's savings balance paid out?
When the job ends and the worker leaves Oman, or three months after the job ends if the worker stays without a new contract (Executive Regulation Article 109).
