How it works

Article 71 lets the employer ask for overtime only with the worker's consent, with normal and extra hours together capped at twelve a day, and pays each extra hour at the basic hourly wage plus at least twenty-five per cent by day and fifty per cent at night; Article 1(16) defines night as nine in the evening to five in the morning. Work on a rest day or public holiday earns the day's wage plus a hundred per cent of the daily basic wage, or a compensatory day. Article 72 covers overtime required without consent - stocktaking for up to fifteen days a year, or emergencies - at fifty and seventy-five per cent, and two hundred per cent plus the day's wage on rest days. Overtime runs on the basic wage, not the gross. The Law gives no monthly-to-hourly divisor, so 240 hours - the thirty-day month times eight hours - is shown as derived and can be changed.

Calculation method

  • Hourly basic = basic / divisor (240, derived)
  • With consent: day x 1.25, night (21:00-05:00) x 1.50
  • Without consent: day x 1.50, night x 1.75

Worked examples

Two night hours

Inputs: Basic OMR 400; divisor 240

Result: OMR 5.000

Forced overtime

Inputs: 3 day + 2 night hours on OMR 480

Result: OMR 16.000

A calculation aid, not legal advice.

Limitations

  • The hourly divisor is not set by law.
  • Rest-day and holiday pay is per day, explained rather than calculated.
  • Excluded categories are not modelled.

Questions

How is overtime paid in Oman?

The basic hourly wage plus at least 25% by day and 50% at night (Labour Law RD 53/2023 Article 71), with the worker's consent.

What are night hours in Oman?

From 9 pm to 5 am (Article 1(16)).

Can my employer make me work overtime without consent?

Only for stocktaking (up to 15 days a year) or emergencies, at higher rates: basic plus 50% by day and 75% at night (Article 72).

Can overtime be given as time off in Oman?

Yes. Article 71 allows the employer to give equivalent time off instead of the overtime premium, and for rest-day or holiday work one compensatory day per day worked.

How long can stocktaking overtime last in Oman?

Overtime required without consent for stocktaking is allowed for at most fifteen days a year under Article 72, paid at the higher forced-overtime rates.

Is overtime paid on basic or gross wage in Oman?

On the basic wage. Article 71 adds the premiums to the basic hourly wage, while Article 97 uses the gross wage only for deductions such as unpaid absence, so the two hourly figures differ.
