How it works

Article 78 of Royal Decree 53 of 2023 gives every worker at least thirty days of annual leave a year on the gross wage, once six months of service are completed, and limits the balance carried forward to thirty days unless leave was not taken because of the work. Article 81 requires leave to be taken at least once every two years; it lets the employer buy out untaken leave at the basic wage only with the worker's written consent, and it pays the whole remaining balance at the gross wage when the employment ends. The widget accrues thirty days across the current leave year from the last work anniversary, adds days carried and subtracts days taken. The cash value divides the gross wage by thirty, the Article 1 month, and multiplies by the balance.

Calculation method

  • Entitlement = 30 days a year (gross wage)
  • Earned this leave year = 30 x days worked / days in the year
  • Cash on exit = gross / 30 x balance

Questions

How much annual leave do workers get in Oman?

At least 30 days a year at the gross wage, after six months of service (Labour Law RD 53/2023 Article 78).

Can I carry leave forward in Oman?

Up to 30 days, unless leave was not taken because of the work; leave must be taken at least once every two years.

Can my employer pay me instead of giving leave?

Only with your written consent, and then at the basic wage (Article 81); unused leave at the end of the job is paid at the gross wage.

Are public holidays in Oman paid at gross wage?

Yes. Article 79 pays official holidays at the gross wage, basic plus all allowances, and they are separate from the thirty days of annual leave.

What if my employer refuses to let me take leave in Oman?

Leave must be taken at least once every two years (Article 81). When the job ends, every unused day is paid at the gross wage, and claims under the Labour Law must be brought within a year of the right arising (Article 9).

Does probation count towards leave in Oman?

Leave becomes due after six months of service. Probation under Article 37 lasts at most three months for monthly-paid workers, so it falls inside that first half-year of service.
