How it works

Remittance providers earn in two ways: a visible fee and a less visible margin - the gap between the rate they give you and the mid-market rate. The widget takes the reference rate from A2Z's shared exchange-rate table (the same source as A2Z's currency converter, fetched and cached on A2Z's server) and lets you either set the provider's margin as a percentage or type the provider's actual rate. It then works out what the recipient gets, the effective rate after the fee, and the total cost of the transfer in your currency and as a percentage of what you paid. You can choose whether the fee is charged on top or taken out of the amount. Every Gulf currency is converted at the live rate from the table - including the Kuwaiti dinar, which is not pegged to the dollar - and amounts use each currency's own decimals, three for KWD, BHD and OMR. If the live table cannot be reached, custom-rate mode still works.

Calculation method

  • Reference rate = USD rate of the destination / USD rate of the source (shared A2Z table)
  • Provider rate = custom rate, or reference x (1 - margin%)
  • Recipient receives = amount converted x provider rate; total paid = amount + fee (fee on top) or amount (fee inside)
  • Total cost = total paid - recipient receives / reference rate; cost % = total cost / total paid x 100

Worked examples

Fee and margin

Inputs: Send AED 5,000; fee AED 20 on top; margin 1%

Result: Total paid AED 5,020; cost about AED 70 (1.4%)

Fee 20 + 1% of the 5,000 converted = 50 lost in the rate.

Custom rate

Inputs: Send AED 1,000; fee AED 15; provider rate typed in

Result: Recipient amount = 1,000 x provider rate; cost compared with the live reference

Indicative reference rates, not a quote or financial advice.

Limitations

  • The reference rate is indicative and updated about once a day; it is not a quote.
  • Correspondent-bank charges deducted in the receiving country are not known to the widget.
  • Promotional rates and loyalty discounts are not modelled - enter them as a custom rate.

Where publishers use it

  • An expat finance blog comparing exchange houses for AED to INR
  • A community site for Filipino workers in Dubai checking AED to PHP offers
  • A fintech's landing page showing its zero-margin advantage
  • An Arabic money-transfer guide
  • A Bur Dubai exchange-house customer comparing INR corridors
  • A Sharjah driver sending money to Peshawar

Questions

What is the real cost of a remittance?

The fee plus the margin in the exchange rate. Sending AED 5,000 with a AED 20 fee at a rate 1% below the reference costs about AED 70 - the AED 20 fee and roughly AED 50 lost in the rate.

Is the reference rate the rate I will get?

No. It is a mid-market rate from A2Z's exchange-rate source; banks and exchange houses offer their own rates, usually lower. Use custom-rate mode to enter the rate you are offered.

Which currencies are supported?

Sending from AED, SAR, QAR, KWD, BHD or OMR to INR, PKR, PHP, BDT, NPR, LKR, EGP, USD, EUR or GBP.

Where do the exchange rates come from?

From ExchangeRate-API through A2Z's server, which caches them and shows the update time. If the provider is down, A2Z serves its last copy for up to 48 hours and the widget says so.

Sources

  1. ExchangeRate-API open access rates - ExchangeRate-API . Reference exchange rates, fetched and cached by A2Z's server (EmbedRatesService); the update time is shown in the widget.
