How it works

When the widget opens it fetches a single US-dollar rate table from A2Z. A2Z's server takes that table from ExchangeRate-API's open-access endpoint, which publishes new rates once a day, re-checks it at most every six hours however many sites embed the converter, and names the provider under every result as its terms require. Every conversion is then done in the browser across the one table: amount x rate of the target currency / rate of the source currency, so a EUR-to-INR figure is a cross rate through the dollar. The rate is shown both ways with about six significant figures, and the converted amount uses each currency's usual number of decimals (none for yen). If the rates cannot be loaded, the widget says so and shows no figure rather than a made-up one.

Method

  • Converted = amount x rate(to) / rate(from), both rates quoted per 1 USD
  • 1 FROM = rate(to) / rate(from) TO; 1 TO = rate(from) / rate(to) FROM
  • Rates are mid-market reference rates; the update date and the provider are shown with each result
  • Rounding: amounts use the currency's standard decimals (Intl.NumberFormat); rates about 6 significant figures

Worked examples

Dollars to rupees

Inputs: 250 USD to INR, with an illustrative table of 1 USD = 88.00 INR

Result: 22,000.00 INR

250 x 88 / 1. The live figure depends on the day's table.

Euros to rupees via the dollar table

Inputs: 100 EUR to INR, with an illustrative table of 1 USD = 0.85 EUR and 88.00 INR

Result: 10,352.94 INR (1 EUR = 103.5294 INR)

A cross rate: 100 x 88 / 0.85. Live figures depend on the day's table.

Yen to rupees

Inputs: 1,500 JPY to INR, with an illustrative table of 1 USD = 150 JPY and 80 INR

Result: 800.00 INR

1,500 x 80 / 150; yen amounts are shown without decimals.

Limitations

  • Mid-market reference rates only, updated daily by the provider; not a dealing, card or remittance rate.
  • No historical rates or charts - the widget converts at the latest table only.
  • Cross rates are derived through the US dollar table, which can differ in the last decimals from a direct quote.
  • 54 currencies; others (including cryptocurrencies, gold and silver) are not supported.
  • A table can be up to about a day old in normal running, and up to 48 hours older when the provider is unreachable (the date shown says which).

Where publishers use it

  • Travel blogs pricing hotels and tours in the reader's own currency
  • Online shops and freelancers quoting prices to international customers
  • Remittance and study-abroad guides showing fees against the mid-market rate
  • News and business sites reporting foreign figures
  • Expat, visa and tuition pages converting fees, stipends and proof-of-funds thresholds
  • Import-export, sourcing and freight-forwarding blogs estimating landed costs in the buyer's currency

Questions

Is this the rate my bank will give me?

No. It is the mid-market reference rate. Banks, card networks and money-transfer services add a margin or fee, so the amount you actually receive is usually lower; comparing their quote with this figure shows the margin.

How often are the rates updated?

ExchangeRate-API publishes its open rates once every 24 hours. A2Z re-checks for a new table at most every six hours, and the widget prints the date of the rates it used under each result.

What happens if the rates cannot be loaded?

If ExchangeRate-API cannot be reached, A2Z keeps serving the last good table (with its original date) for up to 48 hours; after that the widget shows 'Live rates are unavailable right now' and a Try again button instead of a number.

Can I preset the currencies?

Yes. Use v_from, v_to and v_amount in the embed code, for example v_from=USD&v_to=INR&v_amount=250. Codes outside the 54 supported ISO 4217 codes are ignored.

Why can the figure differ from a search engine or a trading screen?

Those show quotes that move by the second during market hours. This widget uses one daily reference snapshot, so on a volatile day the two can differ noticeably; the snapshot's date is printed so readers know which day it reflects.

Does it need an API key or tracking?

No. Visitors' browsers only talk to A2Z, which fetches the provider's open endpoint on the server and credits it as required. There are no cookies and the typed amount is never sent.

Why do some currencies show no decimals?

Amounts follow each currency's usual minor units: yen, won and Chilean or Colombian pesos are shown without decimals, while Kuwaiti, Bahraini and Omani dinars and rials use three.
