How it works

Oman's VAT Law, Royal Decree 121 of 2020, took effect on 16 April 2021 with a standard rate of 5%. Adding VAT multiplies the net amount by 5%; removing it divides the inclusive amount by 1.05, so OMR 210 is OMR 200 plus OMR 10, and amounts are rounded to the baisa, three decimals. Articles 51 to 53 zero-rate exports, international transport, investment metals and specified food and medicines - whose lists the Tax Authority replaced from 1 October 2026 - so suppliers charge no VAT but recover their input tax. Article 47 exempts financial services, healthcare and education, undeveloped land, resale of residential property, local passenger transport and residential rent: no VAT and no recovery. The widget is the same GCC VAT engine as A2Z's UAE, Saudi and Bahrain calculators, with Oman's rate from its rule file.

Calculation method

  • Adding: VAT = net x 5%
  • Removing: net = total / 1.05
  • Zero-rated and exempt: VAT = 0
  • Rounded to the baisa (OMR 0.001)

Worked examples

Adding VAT

Inputs: OMR 200.000 net

Result: VAT OMR 10.000; total OMR 210.000

Removing VAT

Inputs: OMR 210.000

Result: Net OMR 200.000

A calculation aid, not tax advice. The Tax Authority decides how a supply is treated.

Limitations

  • Does not decide whether a supply is zero-rated or exempt.
  • Reverse charge and designated zones are not modelled.
  • Line-level invoice rounding is not applied.

Where publishers use it

  • A Muscat retailer showing VAT-inclusive prices
  • An accountant's Tax Authority compliance note
  • An exporter quoting at 0%
  • A Lulu or Al Fair-style grocery explaining zero-rated staple foods
  • A Salalah tour operator quoting VAT-inclusive packages
