Works with

How it works

Article 54 pays each overtime hour at the wage the worker is entitled to for it plus at least twenty-five per cent for daytime hours and fifty per cent for night hours, and Article 1(12) defines night as the period between seven in the evening and seven in the morning - a much longer night than Qatar's or Oman's. Because the article speaks of the wage the worker is entitled to, not the basic wage, the widget works on the monthly wage including allowances. Work on the weekly rest day (Friday by default, Article 57) or on an official holiday (Article 64) earns the day's wage plus an extra one hundred and fifty per cent, or a substitute day if the worker prefers. Actual hours may not exceed ten a day. The Law has no hourly divisor, so 240 hours (thirty days of eight hours) is used and can be changed - some employers use twenty-six days.

Calculation method

  • Hourly = monthly wage / divisor (240, editable)
  • Day x 1.25; night (19:00-07:00) x 1.50; rest day or holiday x 2.50

Worked examples

Ten daytime hours

Inputs: Wage BHD 480; divisor 240

Result: BHD 25.000

Night and rest day

Inputs: 4 night + 8 rest-day hours on BHD 480

Result: BHD 52.000

A calculation aid, not legal advice.

Limitations

  • The hourly divisor is not set by law.
  • Workers excluded by Article 56 follow a ministerial resolution.
  • Holiday dates change each year by Cabinet decision.

Where publishers use it

  • A Sitra or Hidd industrial employer costing night shifts
  • A hotel in Manama pricing holiday rosters
  • A worker checking overtime on a payslip
  • An Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) contractor or Askar workshop costing round-the-clock crews
  • A Bahrain International Airport ground-handling crew rota
  • A Juffair hotel banqueting team working National Day events
