Formula
Effective tile footprint = (tile width + grout line) × (tile height + grout line). Tiles needed = total area / effective tile footprint, rounded up and increased by a waste percentage for cuts, breakage and pattern matching.
Frequently asked questions
Why include grout width?
Grout lines add up across a large area - ignoring them slightly undercounts the tiles needed, especially with smaller tiles.
