How it works
Qatar Central Bank circular 36/2011, still cited in the 2024 edition of its Instructions to Banks, sets the limits for loans and Islamic finance against salary. A Qatari citizen may borrow up to QAR 2,000,000 - counted as principal plus interest or return - over at most 72 months, provided all monthly obligations stay within 75% of basic salary plus social allowance. A resident may borrow up to QAR 400,000 over at most 48 months, rising to QAR 1,000,000 where the excess is covered by end-of-service benefits, with obligations limited to 50% of total salary including regular allowances. The rate may not exceed the QCB Rate plus 1.5% on a reducing balance. Because the amount cap includes interest, the widget compares the total repayable, not the principal, with the limit. Obligations include every other bank instalment and half the instalments of facilities the borrower guarantees. The result reads 'within' or 'above' a stated limit; it is never an approval.
Calculation method
- Instalment = reducing-balance formula at the annual rate entered (shared GCC loan engine)
- Total repayable <= QAR 2,000,000 (Qatari) or 400,000 / 1,000,000 covered (resident)
- Term <= 72 / 48 months
- Obligations <= 75% of basic + social (Qatari) or 50% of total salary (resident)
Worked examples
Resident
Inputs: QAR 200,000 at 6% for 48 months; total salary 15,000
Result: About QAR 4,697 a month; within limits
Too long
Inputs: Same over 60 months
Result: Above the 48-month limit
An illustration at the rate entered and a regulatory-limit check, not a loan offer.
Limitations
- The QCB Rate changes; the rate cap is described, not checked.
- Bank fees, insurance and salary-transfer requirements are not included.
- Credit-card limits are not modelled.

Questions
What is the maximum personal loan in Qatar?
QAR 2,000,000 for Qatari citizens and QAR 400,000 for residents (up to QAR 1,000,000 if covered by end-of-service benefits), including interest or return, under QCB circular 36/2011.
How long can a personal loan be in Qatar?
Up to 72 months for Qatari citizens and 48 months for residents under QCB circular 36/2011; banks cannot stretch a salary loan beyond those terms.
How much of my salary can go to loan instalments?
75% of basic salary plus social allowance for Qataris; 50% of total salary for residents, counting all monthly obligations.
Does a guarantee I signed for a friend count against my limit?
Yes. QCB counts half of the monthly instalments of performing facilities you guarantee, and all of them if the facility is non-performing, inside your total monthly obligations.
