How it works

Article 79 gives a worker who has completed one full continuous year paid annual leave of at least three weeks while service is under five years and four weeks from five years, with part years counted in proportion; leave pay follows the basic wage of Article 72. The widget finds the current leave year from the last work anniversary, applies 21 or 28 days according to completed service, and accrues it day by day. Days carried over - up to half a year's leave at the worker's written request under Article 80 - are added, and days already taken are subtracted. Leave cannot be waived, but if the contract ends for any reason before it is used, Article 81 pays it in cash; the cash value here is basic divided by thirty per day, an assumption shown on the widget because the Law gives no divisor.

Calculation method

  • Entitlement = 21 days a year; 28 days once five years are completed
  • Earned this leave year = entitlement x days worked in it / days in the year
  • Balance = earned + carried over - taken; cash value = basic / 30 x balance

Worked examples

Six months into year six

Inputs: Start 1 Feb 2021; on 1 Aug 2026

Result: 13.96 days earned

28 days x 182 / 365.

An estimate from the dates entered, not a payroll record.

Limitations

  • Counts Gregorian years from the start date; public holidays and sick leave are separate.
  • More generous contractual leave is not modelled - enter extra days as carried over.
  • Domestic workers have their own leave rules under Law 15/2017.

Where publishers use it

  • A Qatar HR portal showing staff their accrued leave
  • An SME owner pricing a leaver's leave encashment
  • A relocation guide comparing leave across GCC countries
  • A household-services or construction firm planning summer rotations when many staff fly home
  • A Doha hotel or hospital roster office balancing Eid and summer leave requests

Questions

How many days of annual leave do workers get in Qatar?

At least three weeks a year while service is under five years and four weeks from five years (Labour Law Article 79), after one full continuous year, with part years pro rata.

Can annual leave be carried over in Qatar?

Up to half of it can be carried into the following year at the worker's written request; leave may be split into at most two parts (Article 80).

Is unused leave paid on leaving?

Yes - a cash allowance equal to the wage for the leave days due, whatever the reason the contract ends (Article 81).

Is leave pay given before the holiday starts?

Yes. Article 68 requires the employer to pay the leave wage before the worker goes on annual leave, and the worker may not waive the leave in exchange for money while employed.

Do domestic workers in Qatar get the same leave?

No. Law 15/2017 gives domestic workers three weeks of paid leave for each year of service and a return ticket, under their own law rather than the Labour Law.

Annual leave
At least three weeks a year for service under five years and four weeks from five years, after one full continuous year, part years pro rata, paid at the Art. 72 basic wage. Unused leave is paid in cash when the contract ends for any reason (Art. 81 says "his wage"; A2Z uses the basic wage, consistent with Art. 79/72, and says so).
