How it works

A car loan in Qatar is a salary loan with one extra rule. Under QCB circular 36/2011, Third item 10, the principal without interest or return may not exceed 80% of the car's cost, and the car is pledged to the bank; the minimum down payment is therefore a fifth of the price. Everything else follows the personal-loan limits: 72 months for Qataris and 48 for residents, total repayable within QAR 2,000,000 or QAR 400,000, and monthly obligations within 75% of basic salary plus social allowance for Qataris or 50% of total salary for residents. The widget finances the price less your down payment, computes the level instalment on the reducing balance with A2Z's shared loan engine, and lists each limit with a 'within' or 'above' result. Insurance, registration and bank fees are left out because they vary by insurer and lender.

Calculation method

  • Principal = price - down payment; must be <= 80% of the price
  • Instalment = reducing-balance formula at the rate entered
  • Term and salary limits as for personal loans

Worked examples

20% down

Inputs: Car QAR 120,000; down 24,000; 6% over 48 months

Result: About QAR 2,255 a month; within limits

10% down

Inputs: Car QAR 100,000; down 10,000

Result: Above the 80% limit

Questions

What is the minimum down payment for a car in Qatar?

20% of the car's cost: QCB rules cap the loan principal at 80% of the cost.

How long can a car loan be in Qatar?

Up to 72 months for Qataris and 48 months for residents, the same as other salary loans.

Does the salary limit include the car loan?

Yes. All monthly obligations, including the new car instalment, must stay within 75% of basic plus social allowance (Qataris) or 50% of total salary (residents).

Can the bank keep the car registration until the loan is repaid?

Yes. QCB rules require the vehicle to be pledged (hypothecated) to the lender, so the registration shows the bank's interest until the final instalment clears.

Is a used car financed differently?

The 80% ceiling applies to the cost of the car, new or used; lenders may set shorter terms or higher down payments for older vehicles under their own credit policies.

Do Qatari and resident buyers get different car-loan terms?

The 80% ceiling is the same, but the term follows the salary-loan rule: up to 72 months for Qataris and 48 months for residents, and the salary test uses basic plus social allowance for Qataris and total salary for residents.
