What the Mirror Text Generator does

This mirror text generator flips what you type into a mirror image you can copy and paste - "Hello, world!" becomes "!blɿow ,ollɘH" - and also turns text upside down, writes it backwards, reverses each word or reverses the word order. It tells you exactly which characters have no mirrored form, and it draws an image version that mirrors every character perfectly.

Copy-and-paste mirror text works by swapping each letter for a similar-looking character from another alphabet, because Unicode has no mirrored Latin alphabet. That is why some letters cannot flip, and why this page reports them instead of hiding the gap. Everything happens in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your text. Line breaks are kept, and emoji, flags and accented letters are treated as single characters so they never break apart.
  2. Choose a style: Mirror flips left to right, Upside down rotates the text half a turn, Backwards only reverses the order, Each word reverses the letters inside every word, and Word order reverses the words themselves.
  3. Press "Copy flipped text", or copy any style from the list underneath, which shows all five at once.
  4. Read the report. If some characters have no mirrored or rotated look-alike, they are listed with their code points and left unchanged.
  5. For a perfect mirror image - for a T-shirt print, a window sign or an ambulance-style label - download the PNG, which flips the drawing of your text rather than swapping characters.

Reading the results

Mirror and upside-down styles depend on fonts. The substitutes come from blocks such as IPA extensions, Cyrillic and Lisu, so an app whose font lacks a character may show a box instead. Test in the place you will paste it.

Symmetric letters such as o, x, A, H, M and 8 are their own mirror image and only change position. The report counts them as flipped successfully.

Flipped text is harder for screen readers and search engines: a screen reader will read out the substitute characters' names or skip them, so avoid mirror text for anything people need to read reliably, such as names, links or instructions.

Pasting flipped text back in and flipping it again restores the original for every letter that has a look-alike, which is a quick way to read mirror text you have been sent.

Worked example: "AMBULANCE", "Hello, world!" and "why?"

Ambulances carry their name mirrored so drivers read it correctly in a rear-view mirror. AMBULANCE mirrored is ƎƆИA⅃UᗺMA: A, M and U are symmetric, B becomes ᗺ, L becomes ⅃, N becomes И, C becomes Ɔ and E becomes Ǝ, and the order is reversed.

"Hello, world!" mirrored is "!blɿow ,ollɘH": d becomes b, r becomes ɿ, e becomes ɘ, while H, l, o and w are symmetric and only change position. Every character flips, so the report shows none missing. "why?" is different: lowercase h and y have no convincing mirrored look-alike, so they stay as they are and the report lists both; the image version still mirrors them exactly.

Upside down, "Hello, world!" becomes "¡plɹoʍ 'ollǝH": each letter is swapped for its rotated look-alike (e to ǝ, w to ʍ, r to ɹ, d to p, ! to ¡, the comma to an apostrophe) and the whole line is reversed so it reads correctly when you turn the screen round.

Backwards simply reverses the characters to "!dlrow ,olleH". Each word gives ",olleH !dlrow", because the punctuation is part of the word it touches, and Word order gives "world! Hello,".

Why some letters cannot be mirrored

Unicode encodes characters, not pictures, and it only includes a mirrored or turned letter when some real writing system or notation uses it. Turned letters exist for phonetics (ɐ, ǝ, ɥ, ʍ), reversed ones for historical and minority scripts (Ǝ, Ɔ, ꟻ), and Cyrillic happens to supply И and Я. There is simply no standard character for a mirrored lowercase h or y, so any site claiming a complete mirrored alphabet is either leaving letters unchanged or using poor substitutes.

Unicode does define mirroring for brackets and similar symbols in right-to-left text (the Bidi_Mirrored property), which is why ( and ) are swapped here so that bracketed text still looks enclosed after flipping.

Limitations: what the result does not prove

  • Look-alike characters are not the real letters. Search, spell-check, copy into forms with validation, and screen readers all treat them as different characters.
  • Some platforms filter or replace unusual characters in usernames and display names, so mirror text may be rejected or shown as boxes.
  • The PNG image uses your device's system font and is limited to the first 12 lines; it is a picture of the text, not text.
  • Up to 5,000 characters are flipped at a time.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write mirror text?

Type your text here and choose Mirror. Each letter is swapped for a character that looks like its mirror image and the order is reversed, giving text you can copy into chats and bios. For a perfect mirror image of any text, download the PNG version instead.

How do I type text upside down?

Choose Upside down. Every letter is replaced with a rotated look-alike - a becomes ɐ, e becomes ǝ, h becomes ɥ - and the line is reversed so it reads correctly when the screen is turned round. Copy the result and paste it anywhere that accepts Unicode text.

Why do some letters not flip?

Because Unicode has no mirrored or rotated version of every Latin letter. The generator uses look-alikes from other alphabets and notations; where none exists, as with a mirrored lowercase h, the letter stays unchanged and is listed in the report so you know.

Why is ambulance written backwards?

So that drivers ahead see AMBULANCE the right way round in their rear-view mirror. Painting it mirror-reversed on the bonnet means the mirror reverses it back. Try the AMBULANCE example to see the mirrored letters.

How do I read mirror writing someone sent me?

Paste it in and choose Mirror again. Flipping a second time maps each look-alike back to its original letter and restores the order, so the text becomes readable. Letters that were never flipped simply stay as they were.

Will mirror text work on Instagram, WhatsApp or Discord?

Usually, because it is ordinary Unicode, but it depends on the fonts each app and phone uses. Most mirrored and upside-down characters display on current devices; a few rarer ones may appear as empty boxes, so check the result before posting.
