What to expect

What Denoise Photo does

Grain and noise make an old photo look rough and hide detail, but blurring them away makes the whole picture soft. Denoise Photo uses a filter that compares similar patches across the image, so it can smooth noise while keeping edges.

Non-local means filtering

Noise is random from pixel to pixel, while real structure repeats: the same edge, texture or tone appears in many small patches of the photo. Non-local means filtering finds patches that look alike and averages them, which cancels much of the random noise while keeping the shared structure. Light, medium and strong set how different two patches may be and still be averaged.

The keep-detail slider blends some of the original texture back into the result, so a photo does not look waxy. The JPEG option adds a step that smooths the square blocks and ringing that heavy compression leaves behind.

Where denoising fits

Remove scratches before denoising, because noise reduction can smear scratches into soft streaks. Denoise before enhancing faces, restoring colour or upscaling, because each of those steps makes remaining noise more visible.

When to use it

  • Grainy scans of high-speed film prints.
  • Phone photos of old prints taken in dim light.
  • Heavily compressed JPEGs with visible blocks and speckle.

  3. Raise Keep detail if you want to preserve texture, or lower it for a smoother look.
  4. Switch on Reduce JPEG blockiness for heavily compressed files, then process the photo.

Limitations

  • Some fine texture such as fabric, hair and the character of film grain is always softened.
  • Very strong noise in dark areas can leave blotchy patches.
  • Scratches and dust are not removed; use Remove Scratches from Photo.
  • It does not sharpen; use Unblur Photo afterwards if edges look soft.

Privacy

Your photo is processed on a2z.tools servers. It is not sent to any third-party AI provider and is not used for training. The upload and the result are deleted automatically about 60 minutes after processing finishes, and straight away if processing fails or is cancelled. Results are returned only to the browser session that uploaded the photo.

Frequently asked questions

Will denoising make my photo blurry?

It softens some fine texture, because texture and noise look alike at the smallest scale. Edges are kept because the filter averages similar patches rather than blurring everything. Raise Keep detail or choose Light if the result looks too smooth.

Should I choose light, medium or strong noise reduction?

Medium suits most scans and phone photos. Choose Light for photos with only a little grain or with texture you want to keep. Choose Strong for very grainy scans taken on high-speed film or in low light.

What does Reduce JPEG blockiness do?

Heavily compressed JPEG files show square blocks and halos around edges. This option smooths those artefacts in addition to reducing noise. Leave it off for good-quality files, where it can soften detail unnecessarily.

Is film grain the same as noise?

Not exactly. Grain is part of the character of a film photo, while scanner and sensor noise is random speckle. The tool reduces both. If you like the film look, use Light with a higher Keep detail value.

Can denoising remove dust and scratches as well?

No. Dust spots and scratches are larger than noise and are left in place. Remove them first with Remove Scratches from Photo, then continue here.

Why do dark areas look blotchy after denoising?

In very dark areas the noise can be stronger than the real detail, so the filter finds few matching patches. Try Medium instead of Strong, or raise Keep detail so a little texture is kept.
