Try it:

Drop a JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF here, or (up to 15 MB). It stays on your device.

Uses fonts already on your device. Impact is on most Windows and Mac computers; elsewhere a bold fallback is used.

What the Meme Generator does

This meme generator puts captions on your own picture: open an image from your phone or computer, type the classic top and bottom text or add more text boxes, drag them where you want, and download the result as a PNG or JPG. You can crop to square, story (9:16), portrait or landscape, choose the font, the colours and the outline thickness.

Everything happens on a canvas inside this browser tab. The picture is opened from your device and never uploaded, so it works for private photos and keeps working offline once the page has loaded. No font files are downloaded either: it uses Impact or the closest bold font your device already has.

How to use it

  1. Open a picture by dropping it on the box or choosing it from your device - JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF or BMP up to 15 MB. Press "Sample image" if you just want to try the tool.
  2. Pick the shape. Square suits feeds and chat apps, Story 9:16 suits full-screen stories and statuses, and the crop is taken from the centre of the picture.
  3. Type your captions. Text shrinks automatically to fit its box and wraps onto more lines when that lets it be bigger; CAPITAL LETTERS is on by default for the classic look.
  4. Move a caption by dragging it on the picture. With a keyboard, choose the caption in "Caption to move", focus the picture and use the arrow keys (hold Shift for bigger steps).
  5. Adjust the outline and maximum size if you like, then download a PNG for the sharpest result or a JPG for a smaller file, or copy the image straight to the clipboard where the browser allows it.

Reading the results

The download is the same size as the cropped original, up to 2,048 pixels on the long edge. Larger photos are scaled down to keep files manageable; small pictures are never enlarged, so a tiny source will still look soft.

White text with a black outline stays readable on almost any background, which is why it became the meme convention. On a very light or busy picture, raise the outline thickness or switch to dark text with a light outline.

PNG keeps text edges crisp and has no compression artefacts; JPG files are smaller but blur slightly around the letters. Most apps re-compress uploads anyway, so PNG gives them the best starting point.

If Impact is not installed on your device - common on Android and Linux - the text uses a bold fallback font, so the same meme can look slightly different on another computer.

Worked example: a phone photo cropped to a square

A 4,000 x 3,000 photo cropped to Square keeps the central 3,000 x 3,000 pixels, dropping 500 pixels from each side. The long edge is then scaled to 2,048, so the meme downloads as 2,048 x 2,048 pixels.

The top caption box spans 94% of the width (about 1,925 pixels) and 20% of the height (410 pixels). With the largest text size at 12% of the image height, "WHEN THE CALCULATOR" is set at up to 246 pixels and shrinks until the line fits the box.

The outline is 16% of the text size, drawn behind the white fill, so a 200-pixel caption gets a 32-pixel stroke of which roughly half shows around each letter.

The same picture cropped to Story 9:16 keeps a 1,688 x 3,000 strip from the middle, scaled to 1,152 x 2,048 pixels - tall enough to fill a phone screen.

Limitations: what the result does not prove

  • Animated GIFs are opened as a single still frame; the download is not animated.
  • HEIC photos from some phones cannot be opened by most browsers. Export or share the photo as JPG first.
  • Using someone else's photo, artwork or likeness can raise copyright, privacy or personality-right issues. Making the meme here does not give you rights to the picture.
  • Text is drawn with the fonts on your device, so characters your fonts lack (some emoji or scripts) may appear as boxes in the image.

Privacy: where your data goes

Everything you paste, type or drop is processed in this browser tab. It is not uploaded, logged, stored or sent to analytics. Session recording and tag-manager scripts are switched off on this page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a meme with my own picture?

Open the picture with the drop box or "choose a picture", type your top and bottom text, drag the captions where you want them and press Download. The image is drawn in your browser, so it is ready in seconds and never leaves your device.

What font do memes use?

The classic meme font is Impact - tall, bold capitals - in white with a black outline. This generator uses Impact when your device has it (most Windows and Mac computers do) and a similar bold font otherwise, without downloading any font file.

Is this meme generator private?

Yes. Your picture is opened from your device into this browser tab and drawn on a canvas; it is not uploaded to any server. You can check by disconnecting from the internet after the page loads - it still works.

How do I add text anywhere on an image, not just top and bottom?

Press "Add a text box", type the text, then drag the new caption to any spot on the picture. You can add as many boxes as you like, each with its own text colour and outline colour, and remove any you do not need.

What size should a meme be for Instagram stories or WhatsApp status?

Use the Story 9:16 shape, which crops the centre of your picture to the tall full-screen format; from a large photo it downloads at 1,152 x 2,048 pixels. For feed posts and chats, Square 1:1 or Portrait 4:5 usually displays best.

Should I download my meme as PNG or JPG?

PNG keeps the letters perfectly sharp and is best for sharing on social media, which will compress it again anyway. JPG makes a smaller file, useful if a site has an upload size limit, at the cost of slight blurring around the text.
