What the Social Media Engagement Rate Calculator does
This engagement rate calculator divides the interactions a post earned - likes, comments, shares, saves and optionally clicks - by your followers, by the people the post reached, and by its impressions, and shows all three side by side for one post or a whole export of posts. For many posts it adds the mean, the median and the pooled rate, and marks posts that are unusually high or low.
Engagement rate has no single official formula. Platforms, agencies and analytics tools each pick a denominator and a set of interactions, which is why the same post can be quoted at 4% and at 10%. Seeing the methods together, with the formula stated, is the honest way to compare.
How to use it
- Paste your posts as a table with a header row, or drop a CSV export from your analytics. Columns can be in any order: post, likes, comments, shares, saves, clicks, reach, impressions (or views) and followers.
- If your export has no followers column, type your follower count in the box and it is used for every post.
- Choose which interactions count. Likes, comments, shares and saves are on by default; link clicks are off because many conventions leave them out.
- Read the median rate for each method and the post table. Sort by any rate to find your best and weakest posts; outliers are labelled.
- Download the CSV to keep the per-post rates with your report.
Reading the results
By followers is the easiest to compare between accounts because follower counts are public, but it ignores how many people actually saw the post.
By reach measures how the people who saw a post responded, so it is the fairer judge of the content itself. It is usually higher than the follower rate.
By impressions counts repeat views, so it is the lowest of the three for the same interactions. Ad platforms tend to use it.
The median is less swayed by one viral post than the mean. The pooled rate divides all interactions by all reach (or followers, or impressions), which weights bigger posts more.
Worked example: one launch post
A launch post on an account with 12,000 followers received 480 likes, 36 comments, 12 shares and 25 saves - 553 interactions. It reached 5,200 accounts and was seen 6,900 times.
By followers the rate is 553 / 12,000 = 4.61%. By reach it is 553 / 5,200 = 10.63%. By impressions it is 553 / 6,900 = 8.01%.
All three are correct; they answer different questions. If a partner quotes you a rate, ask which denominator and which interactions they used before comparing it with yours.

Limitations: what the result does not prove
- It calculates from the numbers you paste; it cannot check that the export is complete or that interactions came from real accounts.
- Rates from different platforms are not comparable: a like, a save and a view mean different things on each, and reach is counted differently.
- There is no benchmark here. A good rate depends on platform, format, audience size and niche, and published averages rarely say how they were measured.
- Giveaways, contests and paid boosts inflate interactions in ways that say little about the content.

What is the formula for engagement rate?
Engagement rate is interactions divided by an audience figure. The three common versions divide likes, comments, shares and saves by followers, by reach (people who saw the post) or by impressions (total views). Always state which one you used, because they can differ by a factor of two or more for the same post.
Should I calculate engagement rate by reach or by followers?
Use reach to judge the content, because it measures the response of people who actually saw the post. Use followers when you need to compare with other accounts and only public numbers are available, such as when you vet a creator. This page shows both so you do not have to choose blind.
Why is my engagement rate by reach higher than by followers?
Because most posts reach only part of your followers, so the reach figure is smaller and the same interactions divided by it give a bigger rate. If a post reaches more people than you have followers - through shares, explore pages or recommendations - the reach rate can come out lower instead.
Do saves and shares count as engagement?
In most current conventions, yes: saves and shares are strong signals that someone valued the post. Older formulas counted only likes and comments, which is one reason published figures disagree. Tick or untick each interaction type to match the convention your report or client uses.
How do I find my average engagement rate across posts?
Paste all the posts and read the median, which is the middle value and resists one viral post. The mean is shown too, along with the pooled rate - total interactions over total reach - which gives bigger posts more weight. Report the one that matches your question, and say which it is.
What counts as an outlier post here?
A post whose rate falls outside the Tukey fences: more than 1.5 times the interquartile range above the third quartile or below the first. It is a statistical flag, not a verdict - it tells you which posts to look at, such as a giveaway that drew entries rather than interest.
