What the iCloud Storage Calculator does

When a device warns that iCloud storage is almost full, the first useful question is where the space went and how long the current plan will last. This calculator lets you model that. You enter approximate sizes for each kind of data, pick a plan capacity, and it shows the total used, what is left, the percentage used, any amount over capacity and roughly how many months remain at the growth you expect.

How the estimate works

Every figure comes from simple arithmetic you can check:

  • Photos = number of photos × average size in MB × 1,000,000 bytes.
  • Videos = total minutes × 60 × bitrate in Mbps × 1,000,000 ÷ 8. A bitrate of 8 Mbps is about 60 MB for each minute of video.
  • Total used = photos + videos + device backups + iCloud Drive + Mail + Messages + other.
  • Usable capacity = capacity × (1 − safety buffer ÷ 100).
  • Months until full = (usable capacity − total used) ÷ monthly growth. If growth is zero or negative, the storage does not fill up at that rate; if you are already inside the buffer, it is reported as full now.

GB or GiB?

Plans are labelled in decimal gigabytes, where 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. Windows File Explorer counts in binary units of 1,073,741,824 bytes but still labels them GB, which is why a 200 GB plan appears as roughly 186 “GB” there. The calculator shows both so the numbers line up with whichever screen you are comparing against.

Where to find your real numbers

  • iPhone or iPad: open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud. The coloured bar shows each category, and Manage Account Storage lists apps and backups with their sizes.
  • Mac: open System Settings, click your name, then iCloud, and choose Manage.
  • Windows: open the iCloud for Windows app; the storage bar and the Storage button show the breakdown.
  • Photos library size: the Photos section in the same storage list shows how much the library uses in iCloud.

Tips for a more accurate estimate

  • Use the category sizes from your device where you can, and only estimate the rest.
  • For monthly growth, compare the total used today with the figure a month or two ago.
  • Keep a safety buffer of 10 to 15 percent so backups do not fail just before you notice.
  • If the result shows the plan filling within a few months, the Cleanup Planner can show which steps recover the most space with the least risk.

Limitations

This is a model, not a reading of your account. Photo and video sizes vary with resolution, frame rate and format, and libraries rarely grow at a perfectly steady rate. Device backups also change size as apps are added and removed. Settings on your device always has the exact figure.

Privacy

The calculator runs entirely in your browser. It has no sign-in, asks for no account details and does not send the values you type anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know how much iCloud storage I am using?

On an iPhone or iPad open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud. The bar at the top shows total use and each category. On a Mac use System Settings, your name, iCloud; on Windows open iCloud for Windows. Use those figures in the calculator for the most accurate result.

Why does a 200 GB plan look smaller on Windows?

Plans are sold in decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes). Windows counts in binary units of 1,073,741,824 bytes but labels them GB, so 200 GB appears as about 186. The calculator shows both units.

How is video storage estimated?

From duration and bitrate: seconds × Mbps × 1,000,000 ÷ 8 gives bytes. 1080p at 30 frames per second is often around 8 Mbps (about 60 MB per minute) and 4K at 30 is often around 23 Mbps. You can edit the bitrate to match your settings.

What does months until full mean if my storage is not growing?

If you enter zero or negative monthly growth, the storage does not fill up at that rate, so the calculator says so instead of showing an infinite or negative number.

What is the safety buffer for?

It keeps a percentage of the capacity free. Backups and photo uploads can stop when storage is nearly full, so the months-until-full figure counts down to the buffer rather than to the last byte.

Does this calculator connect to my iCloud account?

No. It only does arithmetic on the numbers you type, in your browser. It never asks you to sign in and cannot see or change anything in your account.
