What the Backup Time Calculator does

Before starting a first iCloud backup, restoring a phone or uploading a large photo library, it helps to know whether it will take minutes, hours or days. This calculator estimates that from two numbers: how much data there is and how fast your connection is. It gives a best case, a realistic figure with overhead, the local date and time it would finish if started now, and how many days it needs if the transfer can only run for part of each day.

How the estimate works

Storage sizes are measured in bytes, but connection speeds are measured in bits per second. One byte is eight bits, and internet speeds use decimal prefixes, so 1 Mbps is 1,000,000 bits per second.

  • Best case (seconds) = size in bytes × 8 ÷ speed in bits per second.
  • Realistic = best case × (1 + overhead ÷ 100).
  • Finish time = the current time plus the realistic duration, shown in your local time.
  • Days with a daily window = realistic hours ÷ hours available per day, rounded up to whole calendar days.

For example, 100 GB at 100 Mbps is 800,000,000,000 bits ÷ 100,000,000 bits per second = 8,000 seconds, about 2 hours 13 minutes. With 20 percent overhead that becomes 9,600 seconds, or 2 hours 40 minutes.

Why overhead matters

Data travels with encryption, network framing and acknowledgements, some packets are resent, and many small files transfer more slowly than one large file. A 15 to 20 percent allowance is a sensible starting point; raise it for crowded Wi-Fi or a weak signal.

Which speed to use

A backup sends data from your device, so it is limited by your upload speed, which on many home connections is much lower than the download speed. A restore or a download of your photos uses the download speed. If you do not know your speeds, run a speed test on the same network the device will use and type the result in.

Where to check backup size

On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, then Manage Account Storage (or Manage Storage) and Backups. Choosing a device shows the size of the last backup and, when a backup is pending, the size of the next one.

Tips

  • Keep the device on power and on Wi-Fi; backups often pause on battery or when the screen locks for long.
  • For a very large first backup, a daily overnight window is realistic: enter the hours the device is usually charging.
  • Use GiB if the size came from Windows, which shows binary units labelled GB.

Limitations

The estimate assumes a steady speed. Real transfers vary with network congestion, service-side limits and whether the device sleeps. Treat the realistic figure as a guide, not a guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an iCloud backup take?

It depends on the size of the backup and your upload speed. A 10 GB first backup at 10 Mbps upload takes about 2 hours 13 minutes in theory and about 2 hours 33 minutes with 15 percent overhead. Later backups are usually much smaller because only changes are sent.

Why does my 100 Mbps connection not upload 100 MB per second?

Speeds are in bits and file sizes are in bytes. 100 Mbps is 100 million bits per second, which is at most 12.5 MB per second before overhead.

Should I use upload or download speed?

Use upload speed for a backup or for sending photos to iCloud, and download speed for restoring a device or downloading your data.

What overhead percentage should I choose?

15 to 20 percent is a reasonable allowance for encryption, network framing, retries and small files. Use more if your Wi-Fi is crowded or the signal is weak.

What does the daily window option do?

If the transfer can only run for part of the day, for example overnight while charging, enter those hours. The calculator divides the realistic time by that window and rounds up to whole calendar days.

Why does a huge upload show years?

At very slow speeds large amounts of data genuinely take that long. For example, 12 TB at 1 Mbps is 96 million seconds, a little over three years, before overhead.
