How it works

The UAE Government portal states that normal working hours in the private sector are reduced by two hours a day during Ramadan, under the labour law's provision for reduced hours. The widget takes the normal daily hours, working days and start time you enter, subtracts two hours a day, and gives the Ramadan daily and weekly hours and the finish time (adding any unpaid break). It also flags a schedule above the normal maximum of 8 hours a day or 48 a week, and reminds you of the separate summer rule that stops outdoor work in direct sun from 12:30 to 15:00 between 15 June and 15 September. Ramadan's dates depend on the moon sighting and are not predicted.

Calculation method

  • Ramadan hours a day = normal daily hours - 2
  • Ramadan hours a week = Ramadan daily hours x working days
  • Finish time = start + Ramadan hours + unpaid break

Worked examples

Standard week

Inputs: 8 hours a day; 5 days; start 09:00

Result: 6 hours a day; 30 hours a week; finish 15:00

Six-day week

Inputs: 8 hours a day; 6 days

Result: 6 hours a day; 36 hours a week

General rule from the UAE Government portal; employer policies and official announcements for each Ramadan apply.

Limitations

  • Private sector only; government working hours are set separately.
  • Ramadan dates are not predicted.
  • Does not decide how hours beyond the Ramadan schedule are paid.

Where publishers use it

  • An HR announcement page before Ramadan
  • A company intranet's shift planner
  • An Arabic news site's Ramadan service guide
  • A recruitment agency's employer FAQ
  • A retail chain scheduling shop-floor rotas for the holy month
  • A logistics depot posting reduced warehouse shifts on its staff noticeboard

Questions

How many hours do private-sector employees work in Ramadan in the UAE?

Two hours less a day than normal, according to the UAE Government portal; an employee on 8 hours a day works 6.

Does the reduction apply to non-Muslim employees?

The portal states the reduction for working hours in the private sector generally; check your employer's policy for any differences.

Is work beyond the reduced hours overtime?

The widget does not decide this; contracts and the labour law's overtime rules apply.

When is Ramadan?

Its start and end follow the moon sighting each year and are announced officially, so the widget does not predict them.

What happens when Ramadan falls in summer?

Both rules apply: the working day is two hours shorter, and outdoor work in direct sun on construction sites and similar places must still stop for the midday break between 15 June and 15 September.

Do free-zone companies follow the two-hour Ramadan reduction?

Most mainland and many free-zone employers follow the MOHRE reduction, but DIFC and ADGM have their own employment regulations, and each year MOHRE and the federal government announce the Ramadan timings in a circular.
