How it works

The Central Bank's Regulations on bank loans to individuals cap a personal loan at 20 times the borrower's monthly salary or income and require repayment within 48 months, and cap all monthly loan deductions at 50% of gross salary and regular income. The widget computes the instalment with A2Z's reducing-balance EMI engine, shows the total interest or profit and the total repaid, and flags any of the three limits the loan would break. It assumes a reducing-balance rate, the basis the formula needs; when a lender quotes a flat rate the real cost is much higher, so convert a flat quote before comparing. All three limits come from A2Z's UAE rule file, with their source and verification date under the result.

Calculation method

  • Instalment = P r (1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n - 1), r = annual rate / 12, n = months
  • Largest loan = 20 x monthly salary or income
  • Term <= 48 months
  • DBR = (instalment + other loan payments) / gross monthly income <= 50%

Worked examples

Standard loan

Inputs: AED 100,000; 6%; 48 months

Result: AED 2,348.50 a month

100,000 x 0.005 / (1 - 1.005^-48).

Salary cap

Inputs: Salary AED 15,000

Result: Largest loan AED 300,000

20 x 15,000.

Teacher on AED 9,000

Inputs: Salary AED 9,000

Result: Largest personal loan AED 180,000

20 x 9,000; the instalment must also fit the 50% ratio.

An estimate, not a loan offer.

Limitations

  • Reducing-balance rate only - flat-rate quotes must be converted first.
  • Bank fees, insurance and processing charges are not included.
  • The bank's own minimum salary and employer list are not checked.

Where publishers use it

  • A UAE bank-comparison site's personal loan page
  • An expatriate finance blog explaining how much a salary of AED 15,000 can borrow
  • An HR portal's salary-advance policy page
  • An Arabic finance guide on borrowing limits
  • An employee-benefits page explaining salary-transfer personal loans to new joiners
  • A nurses' association newsletter explaining borrowing limits before wedding or tuition expenses
  • A credit union style savings club comparing a loan with saving up for a purchase

Questions

How much can I borrow as a personal loan in the UAE?

Up to 20 times your monthly salary or income, under the Central Bank's regulations - AED 300,000 on a AED 15,000 salary - provided all loan payments stay within 50% of gross income.

What is the longest term for a personal loan?

48 months. Longer terms are allowed only when a loan is rescheduled, for example on retirement or a fall in income.

What is the instalment on AED 100,000 at 6% over 48 months?

AED 2,348.50 a month on a reducing-balance basis, AED 12,728 of interest in total.

Can a bank charge me for paying off early?

Yes, but at most 1% of the outstanding balance or AED 10,000, whichever is less; use the early settlement calculator.

What happens to a personal loan if I retire?

Under the Central Bank's clarifications, if the borrower retires before the loan is repaid the bank must restructure it so that repayments do not exceed 30% of the income or pension after retirement.

How does a reducing rate differ from a flat rate?

A reducing rate charges interest only on the balance still owed, which falls every month; a flat rate charges it on the original amount for the whole term, so the same headline percentage costs far more when it is flat.

Does the AECB credit report affect a UAE personal loan?

Yes. Banks pull the Al Etihad Credit Bureau report to see existing instalments, credit-card limits and payment history; the Central Bank caps then apply to everything the report shows, so an Emirates NBD or ADCB offer can be smaller than the 20-times-salary ceiling.
