Telegram Channel Button Widget

Send readers to your Telegram channel, group or bot with one sky-blue Join on Telegram button. Paste a t.me link or just @yourchannel, and private invite links work too, so the same button suits a public news channel and a members-only group.

Works with

How it works

Telegram public names are 5 to 32 characters of letters, digits and underscores; the button accepts them as https://t.me/name, telegram.me/name, the web preview form t.me/s/name or simply @name, and links to https://t.me/name. Private invites - t.me/+ followed by the invite hash, or the older t.me/joinchat/ form - are kept as https://t.me/+hash. Telegram's own service paths such as t.me/share, addstickers and proxy are refused, as are names with hyphens or fewer than five characters, and any host other than t.me or telegram.me. The t.me page opens the Telegram app when it is installed and offers the web version otherwise.

Method

  • Public: https://t.me/<5-32 [A-Za-z0-9_]> (also from telegram.me/<name>, t.me/s/<name>, @<name>)
  • Private invite: https://t.me/+<hash> (also from t.me/joinchat/<hash>)
  • Refused: share, addstickers, addemoji, addtheme, proxy, socks, login, joinchat without a hash, other hosts

Worked examples

Just a handle

Inputs: @riverside_cafe

Result: https://t.me/riverside_cafe

A bare @name becomes the t.me link.

Old private invite

Inputs: https://t.me/joinchat/AbCdEfGhIjKl0123

Result: https://t.me/+AbCdEfGhIjKl0123

The legacy joinchat form is rewritten to the current + form.

Too short

Inputs: https://t.me/abcd

Result: Refused: public names are 5-32 letters, digits or underscores

No real public username can be four characters.

Limitations

  • No subscriber counts or channel preview - the Telegram API needs a bot token on a server.
  • The button cannot tell whether an invite link has been revoked.
  • Share links (t.me/share) are a different feature - see the share buttons.

Where publishers use it

  • A crypto or finance newsletter linking to its Telegram announcement channel
  • A language school inviting students to a private Telegram group through a +invite link
  • A developer tool's site pointing users to its Telegram support bot
  • A regional news site whose readers rely on Telegram for breaking alerts, adding Join on Telegram under every article

Questions

Does it work for bots and groups as well as channels?

Yes. Public channels, public groups and bots all live at t.me/<name>, and private groups and channels at t.me/+<hash>. The default wording is Join on Telegram; change the button text to Chat with our bot or similar if that fits better.

Why was my name refused?

Telegram usernames are at least five characters and may only use letters, digits and underscores, so river-side or abcd cannot be real public links. Copy the link from your channel's info page to be sure.

Can it show the subscriber count?

No. Reading the count would need the Telegram Bot API with your bot token on a server, and a number scraped from the preview page could be wrong. The button stays a link.

Should I use the private invite link publicly?

A +invite link lets anyone in, like a public name, but you can revoke and replace it at any time in the channel's invite links. Use it when you want to be able to close the door later.
