How it works

Three kinds of WhatsApp link are recognised by host and path, and anything else is refused with a short explanation. A Channel link (whatsapp.com/channel/ followed by its ID) becomes a Follow us on WhatsApp button; Channels are one-way broadcasts, so followers see your updates but not each other's numbers. A group invite (chat.whatsapp.com/ followed by the invite code) becomes Join our WhatsApp group - anyone with the link can join until you reset it in the group settings. A click-to-chat link (wa.me/ followed by the full international number) or simply the number with its country code becomes Chat with us on WhatsApp; a number that starts with 0 is refused because it lacks the country code WhatsApp needs. Tracking parameters are dropped and the button always links to the clean canonical address.

Method

  • Channel: https://whatsapp.com/channel/<10-64 letters and digits> -> "Follow us on WhatsApp"
  • Group: https://chat.whatsapp.com/<10-64 letters and digits> -> "Join our WhatsApp group"
  • Chat: https://wa.me/<country code + number, 6-15 digits, first digit 1-9> -> "Chat with us on WhatsApp"

Worked examples

A Channel link

Inputs: https://www.whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaExample0Riverside1?utm_source=site

Result: Follow us on WhatsApp -> https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaExample0Riverside1

The label comes from the link type and the tracking parameter is dropped.

A local number

Inputs: 07700 900123

Result: Refused: write the number with the country code

WhatsApp cannot tell which country 07700 belongs to.

A group invite

Inputs: https://chat.whatsapp.com/AbCdEfGhIjKlMn0123

Result: Join our WhatsApp group

Group invites get group wording.

Limitations

  • No follower counts, Channel name or avatar - WhatsApp offers no public API for them.
  • The button cannot add a visitor to a group; WhatsApp asks them to confirm.
  • Pre-filled chat messages are not offered here; use the WhatsApp Chat Button widget for a greeting.

Where publishers use it

  • A local newspaper promoting its WhatsApp Channel for breaking-news alerts at the end of each article
  • A running club inviting new members into its WhatsApp group from the Join page
  • A bakery offering Chat with us on WhatsApp for custom cake orders

Questions

Where do I find my Channel link?

In WhatsApp open Updates, tap your Channel, then the Channel name, and choose Share link or Copy link. It starts with https://whatsapp.com/channel/. Paste it here as it is - the button keeps only the Channel ID.

Is a group invite link safe to publish?

Anyone who has it can join the group and see members' numbers, so publish a group link only for open communities. For one-way announcements a Channel is better: followers do not see each other. If an invite leaks, reset it in the group's invite settings and update the button.

Why was my number refused?

WhatsApp needs the full international number without the national leading 0 - a UK mobile 07700 900123 is +44 7700 900123. The button removes the plus, spaces and brackets and builds https://wa.me/447700900123.

Can it show how many followers my Channel has?

No. WhatsApp offers no public API for Channel follower counts, so any number shown would be made up.

Channel, Community or group - which link should I use?

A Channel is a one-to-many broadcast: only admins post, followers react with emoji or vote in polls, and followers' phone numbers stay hidden from admins and from each other. A Community gathers several related groups under one announcements group and is joined with an invite link, as a group is. A plain group suits smaller circles where everyone talks. For a newsletter-style feed of offers or news, a Channel is usually the right choice.
