Review Grid Widget

Publish a wall of customer reviews you have gathered - up to 60, each with stars, the reviewer's name and role, a date and where it was first posted - in a masonry layout that flows into one, two or three columns, with star filter chips, Show more and a summary worked out only from the reviews on the wall.

How it works

Each review is one line: rating | review text | name | role or company | date | source | avatar. Only the text is required. A rating must be 0 to 5 in half steps (4, 4.5, 4,5 or 5/5 are fine); 4.3 or 7 simply shows no stars rather than a rounded guess. Dates use the YYYY-MM-DD form and are shown in the reader's language - 21 Sept 2026 in en-GB, Sep 21, 2026 in en-US - or as relative time (3 weeks ago) if you prefer; impossible dates such as 2026-02-30 are dropped. The source is plain text (via Google, via Comment card), never a platform logo, so nobody mistakes your selection for a live feed. With at least six reviews spread over two or more star groups, filter chips appear - All, 5, 4, 3 and so on, each with its count; 4.5 counts in the 4 group. Six cards show at first and Show more reveals the next six, moving keyboard focus to the first new card. The optional summary uses the listed reviews alone and says so: Average 4.4 from the 8 reviews shown. Long reviews are cut at a word after 280 characters with a Read more toggle. A footer line states that the reviews were selected and published by the site owner.

Method

  • Line: rating | text | name | role | YYYY-MM-DD | source | https avatar; at most 60 reviews; text up to 2000 characters
  • Rating accepted when 0 <= r <= 5 and 2r is a whole number; stars filled per star = clamp(r - i, 0, 1)
  • Filter group = floor(rating); chips only when reviews >= 6 and at least 2 of the 1-5 groups are used
  • Average = sum of listed ratings / number of rated reviews, rounded half-up to 1 decimal; label: Average x.x from the n reviews shown
  • Columns: 1 below 540 px of width, 2 from 540 px, 3 from 840 px (CSS columns inside the component)

Worked examples

The sample wall

Inputs: 8 sample reviews rated 5, 5, 4, 4.5, 3, 5, 5, 4

Result: Summary: Average 4.4 from the 8 reviews shown; chips All 8, 5 stars 4, 4 stars 3, 3 stars 1; 6 cards and Show 2 more reviews

35.5 / 8 = 4.4375, rounded half-up to 4.4; 4.5 is counted in the 4-star group.

Ratings the grid will not guess

Inputs: 4.3 | Nice place | Ben

Result: Card without stars; Ben is left out of the average

4.3 is not a half step, so it is treated as no rating rather than rounded.

Some reviews without a rating

Inputs: 5 | a, 4 | b, (blank) | c

Result: Average 4.5 from the 2 rated reviews shown

Only rated reviews enter the average, and the label says rated when some are not.

Limitations

  • Reviews are typed or pasted; nothing is imported or kept in sync with a review site.
  • At most 60 reviews; a review cannot contain the | character.
  • Adds no structured data; self-published reviews are not eligible for Google review stars.
  • Filter groups use whole stars, so 4.5 is filed under 4.

Where publishers use it

  • A wedding venue collecting its best feedback from couples, with role lines such as Married June 2026, on its testimonials page
  • A SaaS product showing reviews from customers with company names and avatars, filtered to the five-star ones on the pricing page
  • A bakery re-publishing reviews from comment cards and its Google listing with dates and via labels, so readers can see where each came from
  • A tutor or coach displaying reviews from students, with Show more keeping a long list tidy on a phone

Questions

Can I copy my Google or Trustpilot reviews into the grid?

You type or paste each review, and you decide which ones appear, so treat it as your own selection. Google reviews remain the reviewer's words: quote them accurately, keep the date and use the via label. Trustpilot asks businesses to show Trustpilot reviews only through its own TrustBox widgets, so for Trustpilot content use a TrustBox rather than this grid.

Why isn't the average called a Google rating?

Because it is not one. The summary is worked out only from the reviews you listed - Average 4.4 from the 8 reviews shown - and a hand-picked set is usually kinder than the full picture. Calling it a Google or overall rating would mislead visitors; the wording makes the scope plain.

Will Google show stars for my site because of this grid?

No. The grid writes no Review or AggregateRating markup. Google's review snippet rules make LocalBusiness and Organization pages ineligible for star results when the business controls the reviews shown about itself, including reviews displayed through embedded widgets, so markup would gain nothing and could look like spam.

Is it legal to publish only my best reviews?

Choosing which reviews to display on your own site is common, but presentation matters. The US FTC rule on consumer reviews and testimonials (16 CFR Part 465) bans fake or AI-invented reviews, reviews from insiders presented as independent, and claims that displayed reviews represent all reviews when negative ones were suppressed. The footer line says the reviews were selected by you; never write reviews yourself or pay for positive ones.

What happens if an avatar link breaks?

Avatars must be https addresses; anything else, or an image that fails to load, is replaced by the reviewer's initials on a soft accent tint, so a dead link never leaves a broken-image icon in the wall.

How is this different from the Testimonials Widget?

Testimonials Widget is built for a handful of quotes in a featured, list or slider layout. Review Grid is for volume: up to 60 short reviews in a masonry wall, with star filters, Show more, dates, sources and an average limited to what is shown.
