How it works

Google gives every business listing a Place ID - a long code that usually begins ChIJ - and Business Profile owners can also copy a short review link of the form g.page/r/<code>/review. The widget accepts either, or a full search.google.com/local/writereview link you already have. A Place ID is checked against the shape Google uses (letters, digits, hyphen and underscore only) and turned into https://search.google.com/local/writereview?placeid=<id>, the address that opens the star-and-text review dialog on top of your listing; a short link is kept exactly as Google issued it, minus any tracking query. Any other host, a look-alike such as g.page.example.com, credentials, ports, quotes or script are refused, and the builder says so instead of drawing a broken button. The card layout adds your business name, a short thank-you and a note that reviews are public. The QR layout encodes the same address at error correction level M with the vendored qr-code-styling engine, loaded only for that layout; Print sends a 4 x 6 inch image of the card to the printer without the rest of your page, and Download PNG saves the same 300 dpi image.

Method

  • Place ID accepted when it matches ^ChIJ[A-Za-z0-9_-]{10,200}$ or the general ^[A-Za-z0-9_-]{16,300}$ shape
  • Review address = https://search.google.com/local/writereview?placeid= + encodeURIComponent(Place ID)
  • Short link accepted only as https://g.page/r/<4-200 letters, digits, - or _>/review; rebuilt without query or fragment
  • writereview links: host must be exactly search.google.com and path /local/writereview; only the placeid parameter is kept
  • QR: qr-code-styling 1.8.4, error correction M, #10162b on white; print image 1200 x 1800 px = 4 x 6 in at 300 dpi

Worked examples

A Place ID from the Place ID Finder

Inputs: place = ChIJN1t_tDeuEmsRUsoyG83frY4 (the example ID in Google's documentation)

Result: Button link: https://search.google.com/local/writereview?placeid=ChIJN1t_tDeuEmsRUsoyG83frY4

The ID passes the ChIJ shape check and is appended, URL-encoded, to the writereview address.

The short link from a Business Profile

Inputs: place = g.page/r/CbXyZ123abcEAE/review/?utm_source=sign

Result: Button link: https://g.page/r/CbXyZ123abcEAE/review

https is added, the trailing slash and the tracking query are dropped, and the code itself is kept exactly.

A look-alike address

Inputs: place = https://g.page.example.com/r/CbXyZ123abc/review

Result: No button; the builder shows: that is not a Place ID or a Google review link

The host must be exactly g.page or search.google.com, so a lookalike domain cannot borrow the Google button.

Limitations

  • Shows no rating, review count or review text - none is available without the paid Places API.
  • Cannot check that a Place ID belongs to your business; open the button once to confirm the right listing appears.
  • The QR card prints at 4 x 6 inches; for other sizes use Review QR Code, which also handles Trustpilot, Yelp and other sites.
  • Opening the review form requires the visitor to sign in to a Google account.

Where publishers use it

  • A cafe or salon adding the QR card to a laminated sign by the till, so customers can review from their phone while they wait for change
  • A plumber or electrician putting the plain button at the end of the job-complete email and on the invoice page of their website
  • A dental or physiotherapy practice placing the thank-you card on its after-appointment page, next to the booking confirmation
  • A shop with several branches making one button per branch, each with its own Place ID, on the store-finder pages

Questions

How do I find my Google Place ID?

Open Google's Place ID Finder on the Maps Platform documentation page, type your business name, and copy the code shown under the pin - it usually starts with ChIJ. If you manage the Business Profile, you can skip the ID: in Google Search or Maps choose Read reviews, then Get more reviews, and copy the short g.page review link; paste either one into the widget.

Why doesn't the button show my star rating or number of reviews?

Because the page has no honest way to know them. The rating and count live in Google's Places API, which needs a paid API key and comes with display and caching rules; copying them by hand would go stale the day after you publish. A button that shows no number is better than one that shows a wrong one - if you want to quote a rating you report yourself, use Star Rating Display, which labels it as yours.

Is the writereview?placeid= link an official Google format?

It is the address Google's own Place ID tools and many review integrations have used for years, and it opens the review dialog over your listing, but Google does not document it as a formal API. The short link from your Business Profile is the one Google itself hands out, so prefer it when you have it; the widget keeps that link exactly as issued.

Can I show the button only to happy customers?

No, and the widget has no setting for it. Asking how a visit went and sending only satisfied customers to Google is called review gating; Google Maps policy forbids selectively soliciting positive reviews, and in the US the FTC rule on consumer reviews (16 CFR Part 465) bans review suppression. Every visitor sees the same button.

Will this give my site review stars in Google Search?

No. The widget adds no structured data. Google treats reviews a business shows about itself as self-serving, so LocalBusiness and Organization pages are not eligible for review rich results even with markup; your stars appear on your Google Business Profile and in Maps, which is where the reviews actually live.

Can I offer a discount for leaving a review?

Not for Google reviews: Google counts reviews given in exchange for discounts, free items or payment as fake engagement and may remove them. The widget's default wording asks for honest feedback and contains no incentive; keep your own message free of one too.
