How it works

The text is built from the vocabulary of the traditional lorem ipsum passage, itself a scrambled excerpt of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum (45 BC). Sentences have 6 to 14 words with an occasional comma and paragraphs have 4 to 7 sentences, which gives a realistic texture for layouts. The generator is seeded, so the same settings always produce the same text - handy when an embedded page should look stable - and the Variation number gives a different text.

  • Vocabulary: words of the standard lorem ipsum passage
  • Sentence: 6-14 words, capitalised, full stop; paragraph: 4-7 sentences
  • Optional opening: "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit."
  • Seeded pseudo-random generator (mulberry32); limits 50 paragraphs, 300 sentences, 5,000 words

Limitations

  • Latin-looking filler only: it cannot test how a layout copes with long German compounds, right-to-left Arabic or CJK line breaking.
  • The seeded generator is for stable layouts, not randomness; never use its output as test passwords or unique IDs.
  • HTML output is plain paragraphs; headings, lists and links are not generated.

Questions

What does lorem ipsum mean?

Very little. It is a scrambled section of a Latin text by Cicero, chosen because its letter distribution looks like ordinary prose without distracting the reader.

Why is the text the same each time?

The generator is seeded so an embedded widget shows stable text. Change the Variation number for a different text.

Can I get HTML paragraphs?

Yes. Choose HTML to get each paragraph wrapped in <p> tags.
