How it works

Search results cut titles and descriptions by the space they take on screen, not by a fixed number of characters: a title of narrow letters fits more characters than one full of capitals and Ws. The widget measures the text in Arial at the sizes a results page uses (20 px titles, 14 px descriptions) with the browser's canvas, falling back to Arial's published character widths. It compares the width with the commonly observed limits - about 600 px for titles, about 920 px for desktop descriptions and 680 px on mobile - and truncates at a word boundary with an ellipsis. These limits are observations, not published rules, and Google often rewrites titles and descriptions, so the preview is a guide rather than a guarantee.

Method

  • Width = text measured in Arial: titles 20 px, descriptions 14 px (fallback: Arial advance widths per character)
  • Approximate limits: title ~600 px; description ~920 px desktop, ~680 px mobile
  • Truncation: last whole word that fits, followed by " ..."
  • Breadcrumb: host without www, then up to four path segments

Limitations

  • The 600 px and 920/680 px limits are widely observed values, not figures Google publishes; they can change without notice.
  • It does not show rich results: star ratings, sitelinks, dates, images, FAQ drop-downs or the site favicon and name line.
  • Bing, DuckDuckGo and other engines use different fonts and widths, so the preview only approximates Google.
  • It cannot predict when Google rewrites the title or picks a different snippet, which happens often.

Where publishers use it

  • SEO courses teaching how to write title tags and meta descriptions
  • Agency blogs explaining why a snippet appears cut off
  • Content-team style guides with snippet length rules
  • CMS and plugin documentation for SEO fields

Questions

Is there an exact character limit for titles?

No. Google truncates by pixel width, which is why about 50-60 characters is only a rule of thumb. Wide letters use up the space faster.

Will Google show my meta description?

Not always. Google frequently writes its own snippet from the page content when it better matches the search.

Why is this called an estimate?

Fonts, sizes and limits vary by device and change over time, and Google does not publish them. The widget uses widely observed values.

Does the widget check my live page?

No. It only previews the text entered; nothing is fetched.
