Embed a slug generator for your CMS or blogging tutorials. Readers type a title and get a lowercase, hyphenated URL slug with accents converted, apostrophes removed and, optionally, stop words dropped and a maximum length applied.

A plain iframe. Works everywhere, including site builders that strip scripts. Adjust height if your content needs more room.

Works with

How it works

The widget follows the same approach as the A2Z Slug Generator. Text is Unicode-normalised and accent marks are removed, so Crème Brûlée becomes creme-brulee rather than cr-me-br-l-e; letters with no accent to remove are mapped by hand (ß to ss, æ to ae, ø to o, ł to l, þ to th). Apostrophes are dropped instead of becoming separators, so don't becomes dont. Every other run of punctuation and spaces becomes one hyphen or underscore, with none left at the ends. Optionally, common English stop words are removed (unless that would leave nothing), and a maximum length cuts at a word boundary. Non-Latin scripts are dropped by default or kept as Unicode letters if the reader prefers.

Method

  • NFKD normalise, strip combining marks; map ß æ ø œ đ ð ł þ ı to ASCII
  • Drop apostrophes; split on anything that is not A-Z, a-z, 0-9 (or any letter/digit in Unicode mode)
  • Join words with - or _; lowercase unless switched off
  • Max length: keep whole words while the slug fits; a single long word is cut

Limitations

  • Transliteration covers Latin-script letters only; Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic, Devanagari or CJK titles are dropped or kept as Unicode, never romanised.
  • The stop-word list is English; articles and prepositions in other languages are kept.
  • It cannot check whether the slug is already used on your site, and it adds no date or ID prefix.

Where publishers use it

  • WordPress, Ghost or Webflow guides on permalink settings
  • SEO tutorials on writing readable URLs
  • Developer docs for generating routes from titles
  • Ecommerce help pages about product URL handles

Questions

Should I remove stop words from slugs?

It is optional. Shorter slugs are easier to read and share, but removing words like "not" can change the meaning, so check the result.

Hyphens or underscores?

Hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator, while underscores join words together.

What about titles in other scripts?

Turn on "Keep non-Latin letters" for a Unicode slug. Browsers display it normally, though some tools show it percent-encoded.

Does changing a slug affect SEO?

Changing the URL of a published page breaks existing links unless you add a 301 redirect from the old address.
