Adds a small script (what it does) that sizes the widget to fit its content, loads it lazily and keeps it isolated from your page's CSS.

How it works
The Umm al-Qura calendar, published by King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, is Saudi Arabia's official civil Hijri calendar. The widget converts your Gregorian dates with the Umm al-Qura calendar built into the browser - the same CLDR tables used by major operating systems - and A2Z checks it against published dates such as 1 Muharram 1446 on 7 July 2024 and 1 Ramadan 1445 on 11 March 2024. Hijri age is the number of completed Hijri years: this year's Hijri year minus your birth year, less one if your Hijri birthday has not yet come round. Because a Hijri year of twelve lunar months is about eleven days shorter than a Gregorian year, Hijri age runs ahead, by roughly one year for every thirty-three. If you were born on the 30th of a month that has only 29 days this year, your birthday falls on the 29th. Month starts follow the published calendar, which can differ by a day from the moon sighting announced for Ramadan and the Eids.
Calculation method
- Hijri date = Umm al-Qura conversion of the Gregorian date
- Hijri age = Hijri year now - Hijri birth year - (1 if the Hijri birthday is still ahead)
- Next Hijri birthday = first later date with the birth Hijri month and day (or the month's last day)
Worked examples
Born 1 January 2000
Inputs: Age on 7 October 2026
Result: 27 Hijri years; 26 Gregorian years
Born 24 Ramadan 1420; today 26 Rabi al-Thani 1448.
A calendar conversion for general use. Official documents state the dates that apply to you.
Limitations
- Uses the browser's Umm al-Qura tables; very old browsers without the islamic-umalqura calendar cannot convert.
- Does not apply local moon sighting.
- Dates far outside the published Umm al-Qura tables may be approximate.
Where publishers use it
- A Saudi government-services guide where age limits are stated in Hijri years
- A family or school website celebrating Hijri birthdays
- An Arabic culture blog explaining why Hijri and Gregorian ages differ
- A Makkah or Madinah school office checking pupils' Hijri ages
- A genealogy blog converting family birth records
Questions
How do I calculate my age in Hijri years?
Convert your date of birth to the Umm al-Qura Hijri calendar, subtract the Hijri birth year from the current Hijri year, and take one off if your Hijri birthday has not yet arrived this year.
Why is my Hijri age higher than my Gregorian age?
A Hijri year is about 354 days, eleven days shorter than a Gregorian year, so Hijri age gains about one year every 33 years. Someone born on 1 January 2000 is 26 in Gregorian years but 27 in Hijri years in October 2026.
Which Hijri calendar does this use?
Umm al-Qura, Saudi Arabia's official calendar. Dates can differ by a day from moon-sighting announcements used for Ramadan and the Eids.
Is my Hijri birthday the same date every Gregorian year?
No. Because the lunar year is shorter, your Hijri birthday moves about eleven days earlier on the Gregorian calendar each year, cycling through every season roughly once every thirty-three years.
Why do Saudi forms ask for a Hijri date of birth?
Older Saudi civil records, national ID cards and some government e-services (Absher) record dates in Umm al-Qura Hijri, so applicants often need the Hijri form of their Gregorian birth date.
