How it works

Enter the qualifying earnings paid on one payday - ordinary-hours pay, commissions, bonuses and allowances, with any salary-sacrificed amount still included - plus the pay cycle and the payday. The super guarantee is 12% of that figure, so the ATO's own $3,000 fortnightly example gives $360. For earnings paid from 1 July 2026 the contribution must be received by the employee's fund within 7 business days after payday, or 20 for a new employee or a new fund. The ATO excludes Saturdays, Sundays and any day that is a public holiday for the whole of any state or territory, even one you do not operate in, so the widget builds that union from the holiday rules of all eight jurisdictions; Monday 5 October 2026, Labour Day in NSW, SA and the ACT and the King's Birthday in Queensland, pushes a 1 October payday to 13 October. Pay dates up to 30 June 2026 fall back to the old quarterly due dates. The yearly total stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base and is compared with the $32,500 concessional cap.

Calculation method

  • Super guarantee per payday = 12% x qualifying earnings (salary sacrifice added back)
  • Due date (paid from 1 July 2026) = payday + 7 business days (20 for a new employee or new fund)
  • Business day = not Saturday or Sunday and not a public holiday for the whole of any Australian state or territory
  • Paid 1 July 2025 - 30 June 2026: due 28 October, 28 January, 28 April or 28 July for the quarter, moved to the next business day
  • Yearly SG = 12% x min(earnings x paydays, $270,830); concessional total = yearly SG + yearly salary sacrifice vs $32,500

Worked examples

Long weekend in October

Inputs: $3,000 fortnightly; payday Thursday 1 October 2026

Result: Super guarantee $360.00; must reach the fund by Tue, 13 Oct 2026

Monday 5 October is a whole-state holiday in NSW, QLD, SA and the ACT, so it is skipped.

Christmas pay run

Inputs: $5,000 monthly; payday 24 December 2026

Result: Super guarantee $600.00; must reach the fund by Thu, 7 Jan 2027

25 and 28 December and 1 January are skipped as holidays covering whole states.

Last quarterly period

Inputs: $3,000 fortnightly; payday 15 May 2026

Result: Must reach the fund by Tue, 28 July 2026

Earnings paid April-June 2026 still use the quarter 4 due date.

An estimate for planning, not payroll, tax or legal advice. Check the ATO's current guidance before relying on a deadline.

Limitations

  • Holidays that are gazetted each year (for example a future AFL Grand Final Friday in Victoria) can only be counted once published; check deadlines near late September.
  • Days that some regions replace (Melbourne Cup Day, WA King's Birthday) are counted as business days, giving the earlier deadline - the widget flags them.
  • It does not decide who is an employee, which payments are qualifying earnings or whether an exceptional-circumstances extension applies.
  • Clearing-house processing time is not added: the deadline is when the fund must receive the money.

Where publishers use it

  • A bookkeeping firm's newsletter explaining Payday Super deadlines to small-business clients
  • A payroll software help article showing the due date for a Christmas Eve pay run
  • A franchise operator's onboarding portal reminding new managers of the 20-business-day rule for new starters
  • An HR blog post comparing quarterly super with Payday Super for a fortnightly payroll
  • A recruitment agency page showing contractors how much super their hourly rate attracts

Questions

What is Payday Super?

From 1 July 2026 employers must pay the super guarantee with each pay rather than quarterly. The contribution is on time only if the employee's fund receives it, with the details needed to allocate it, within 7 business days after the payday.

What counts as a business day?

Any day except a Saturday, a Sunday or a public holiday for the whole of any Australian state or territory - so Queensland's King's Birthday counts as a non-business day for a Perth employer too. A holiday that covers only part of a state, such as Royal Hobart Show Day, is still a business day.

Do I calculate super before or after salary sacrifice?

Before. The ATO adds salary-sacrificed amounts back into qualifying earnings, so sacrifice cannot be used to reduce the 12% the employer must pay.

When were quarterly payments due?

For earnings paid up to 30 June 2026 the old rules apply: 28 October, 28 January, 28 April and 28 July for the four quarters, or the next business day when that date is a weekend or public holiday.

Is there a limit on super guarantee?

Yes. Once an employee's qualifying earnings for 2026-27 reach the $270,830 maximum contribution base, the employer may stop paying the minimum for that year - 12% of it is $32,499.60, just under the $32,500 concessional cap.
