How it works

The widget works on the whole financial year and then divides by 52, 26 or 12. Salary sacrifice comes off first, giving taxable income. Tax uses the ATO's 2026-27 resident scale: nil to $18,200, 15c per dollar to $45,000, $4,020 plus 30c to $135,000, $31,020 plus 37c to $190,000 and $51,370 plus 45c above. The low income tax offset ($700, tapering to nil at $66,667) then reduces that tax but never below zero. Medicare is the lesser of 2% of taxable income and 10% of the income above $28,011, the shade-in the ATO's own $29,000 example produces ($98.90). With a study loan ticked, the 2026-27 marginal HELP schedule is applied to repayment income, which adds the sacrificed super back. The employer's 12% super guarantee is calculated on pay before sacrifice, capped at the $270,830 maximum contribution base, and checked with your sacrifice against the $32,500 concessional cap. An $85,000 salary leaves $2,587.69 a fortnight.

Calculation method

  • Taxable income = annual pay (or hourly rate x hours x 52) - salary sacrifice
  • Tax = 15% of $18,200-$45,000 + 30% of $45,000-$135,000 + 37% of $135,000-$190,000 + 45% above $190,000
  • LITO = $700 to $37,500; $700 - 5% of income over $37,500 to $45,000; $325 - 1.5% of income over $45,000 to $66,667
  • Medicare levy = min(2% x taxable income, 10% x (taxable income - $28,011)), nil at or below $28,011
  • HELP (repayment income RI = taxable income + salary sacrifice) = 15% x (RI - $69,528) to $129,717; $9,028 + 17% x (RI - $129,717) to $186,050; 10% x RI above
  • Employer super = 12% x min(pay before sacrifice, $270,830); take-home = pay - sacrifice - tax - Medicare - HELP

Worked examples

Salaried, paid fortnightly

Inputs: $85,000 a year; fortnightly; no HELP

Result: Take-home $2,587.69 a fortnight ($67,280 a year); income tax $616.15, Medicare $65.38, employer super $392.31 on top

Tax 4,020 + 30% x 40,000 = 16,020; Medicare 2% x 85,000 = 1,700; super 12% x 85,000 = 10,200.

With a HELP debt, monthly

Inputs: $100,000 a year; monthly; HELP ticked

Result: Take-home $6,075.77 a month; HELP $380.90 a month

HELP 15% x (100,000 - 69,528) = 4,570.80 a year; tax 20,520; Medicare 2,000.

Hourly worker, weekly

Inputs: $30 an hour; 38 hours; weekly

Result: Take-home $959.64 a week; income tax $157.56 after the low income tax offset

Gross 30 x 38 x 52 = 59,280; tax 8,304 - LITO 110.80 = 8,193.20; Medicare 1,185.60.

An estimate for Australian residents, for illustration only - not tax or financial advice. Actual withholding follows the ATO tax tables.

Limitations

  • Australian residents for the whole year who claim the tax-free threshold only; non-residents, working holiday makers and part-year residents are not modelled.
  • Medicare low-income thresholds are the 2025-26 single figures (2026-27 not yet published); family thresholds, SAPTO and the Medicare levy surcharge are not included.
  • An annual-liability estimate spread evenly: actual PAYG withholding uses ATO tax tables and the final amount is settled in the tax return.
  • No other income, deductions, offsets, fringe benefits or investment losses are considered.

Where publishers use it

  • An Australian job board showing the fortnightly take-home of a $95,000 advertised salary
  • A university careers page letting graduates see how a HELP debt changes each pay
  • A recruitment agency comparing a $45-an-hour contract with a salaried offer before super
  • A financial adviser's blog post on salary sacrificing $10,000 into super and the tax it saves
  • A hospitality employer's hiring page explaining what casual staff actually receive per week

Questions

What changed for 2026-27?

The 16% rate on income between $18,201 and $45,000 became 15% from 1 July 2026, so the tax at $45,000 falls from $4,288 to $4,020; the other thresholds ($135,000 and $190,000) and rates (30%, 37%, 45%) are unchanged.

Is the employer super taken out of my pay?

No. The 12% super guarantee is paid by the employer on top of the salary into your fund, so it is shown separately. Only salary sacrifice, which you choose, reduces your take-home pay.

How is the Medicare levy reduced for low incomes?

At or below $28,011 there is no levy; above that you pay 10% of the excess until that equals 2% of your whole taxable income, which happens at about $35,013. The ATO's example: $29,000 gives a levy of $98.90. These are the 2025-26 thresholds - the latest the ATO has published.

How do HELP repayments work now?

Since 2025-26 you repay only on income above the threshold: in 2026-27 nothing up to $69,528, then 15c per dollar to $129,717, then $9,028 plus 17c per dollar to $186,050, and 10% of all repayment income above that. A $100,000 earner repays $4,570.80.

Why does salary sacrifice not lower my HELP repayment?

Repayment income adds reportable super contributions - which include salary sacrifice - back onto taxable income, so sacrificing $10,000 lowers your tax but not the income HELP is measured on.

Does it work for non-residents or working holiday makers?

No. Foreign residents have no tax-free threshold and working holiday makers pay 15% from the first dollar to $45,000; neither scale is modelled, so those visitors should not rely on the figure.
