How it works

A business day is any day that is not a weekend day and not in the holiday list. The weekend is configurable, so it works for Saturday-Sunday countries as well as Friday-Saturday ones such as Saudi Arabia, or a six-day week with only Sunday off. In count mode both the start and the end date are included by default, like the A2Z Business Days Calculator, and each end can be switched off. In add mode the start date itself is never counted, so adding one business day to a Friday gives the next Monday; a negative number counts backwards. Holidays that fall on a weekend are not subtracted twice, and any line that is not a real YYYY-MM-DD date is listed rather than silently ignored.

Calculation method

  • Business day = not a weekend day and not a listed holiday
  • Count: business days in [start, end], each end optional
  • Add N: step one calendar day at a time from the start (not counted), counting only business days until N are reached
  • Weekday from the calendar-day number (1970-01-01 was a Thursday), so time zones cannot shift a date

Worked examples

A full calendar year, Monday to Friday

Inputs: Count mode, 2026-01-01 to 2026-12-31, weekend Saturday-Sunday, no holidays

Result: 261 business days

2026 starts on a Thursday and has 52 full weeks plus Thursday 31 December: 52 x 5 + 1 = 261.

Next working day after a Friday

Inputs: Add mode, start Friday 2026-10-02, add 1

Result: Mon 5 Oct 2026 (3 calendar days)

The start date is never counted, and Saturday and Sunday are skipped.

Ten working days in the Gulf

Inputs: Add mode, start Thursday 2026-10-01, add 10, weekend Friday-Saturday

Result: Thu 15 Oct 2026 (14 calendar days)

Two Friday-Saturday weekends fall inside the span, so ten business days take fourteen calendar days.

Limitations

  • No public-holiday calendars are built in; the dates you paste are the only holidays.
  • Half days, shifts and cut-off times ("orders after 2 pm ship tomorrow") are not modelled.
  • Ranges are limited to 200 years and additions to 10,000 business days either way.

Where publishers use it

  • Courier and e-commerce sites estimating delivery dates in working days
  • Law firms and consultancies explaining statutory deadlines counted in business days
  • Invoice and payment-terms pages (for example "due in 10 working days")
  • HR sites in the Gulf with a Friday-Saturday weekend

Questions

Are public holidays included automatically?

No, because holidays differ by country, state and company. Paste the dates you observe, one per line, and the widget skips them.

Is the start date counted?

When counting between two dates, yes by default (switch it off if needed). When adding business days, no: day one is the next business day.

Can the weekend be Friday and Saturday?

Yes. Choose it in the Weekend list; Friday only, Sunday only, Saturday only and Thursday-Friday are also available.

What if a holiday falls on a weekend?

It is counted once, as a weekend day. The widget does not move holidays to the next Monday; add the substitute date to the list if your organisation observes one.
