How it works

The image is downsampled to a manageable size and pixels are grouped by color similarity using a simple k-means clustering pass, which finds the k colors that best represent the whole image (rather than just the k most literally frequent pixel values). Click any HEX value to copy it.

K-means clustering is an approximation that converges quickly - for design palette purposes it is generally a very close match to what you would pick by eye.
