What the Notice Period Date Calculator does

This calculator finds the last day of a notice period from the date notice is given and the length of notice - in calendar days, weeks, months or working days. It counts weekends and the public holidays you list, can move an end date that falls on a non-working day, lists every day in the period, and saves the last day to your calendar.

The counting rule is shown, not hidden. By default the period starts the day after notice is given, which is how GOV.UK describes a UK notice period usually running; months end on the same date in the later month. Your contract, and the law where you work, decide the rule that actually applies.

How to use it

  1. Enter the date you give (or receive) notice and the length of the notice period, and choose the unit.
  2. Leave 'count from the day after' ticked unless your contract says notice starts on the day it is given.
  3. Choose your weekend, and list any public holidays in the period if you are counting working days or want them marked.
  4. Decide what should happen if the period ends on a weekend or holiday: keep the date, or move it to the previous or next working day.
  5. Read the last day, check the day-by-day count, and add the date to your calendar.

Reading the results

The last day of notice is normally the last day of employment, even if you are not rostered to work that day. Your last day physically at work can be earlier because of leave, garden leave or a weekend.

Working-day notice skips weekends and the holidays you list. Calendar notice counts every day; weekends and holidays inside it still count.

Moving an end date to a working day is a choice some policies make; statutory and contractual periods usually just end on the date they end.

Worked example: one month from 15 March, and 20 working days over Christmas

Notice of one month given on Sunday 15 March 2026 runs from 16 March and ends on Wednesday 15 April 2026 - the corresponding date a month later. If your contract counts the day of giving notice as day one, it ends on 14 April instead.

Twenty working days' notice given on Friday 11 December 2026, with a Saturday-Sunday weekend and holidays on 25 December, 28 December and 1 January, starts on 12 December. Counting Monday to Friday and skipping the three holidays, day 20 is Wednesday 13 January 2027 - 33 calendar days later.

Formulas and scoring rules

Start
first day = notice date + 1 (or the notice date itself, if counted)
Days and weeks
last day = first day + days - 1; weeks are 7 days each
Months
last day = the same day-of-month n months after the notice date (minus 1 if the notice date counts)If that month is shorter, the last day of the month is used: one month from 31 January 2026 ends on 28 February.
Working days
count forward from the first day, skipping weekend days and listed holidays, until n working days are reached
UK statutory minimum from an employer
1 week after 1 month's service; 1 week per complete year from 2 years; at most 12 weeksEmployment Rights Act 1996, section 86.

Statutory and contractual notice

In the UK an employee who has worked for more than a month must give at least a week's notice, and an employer must give at least the statutory minimum in section 86 of the Employment Rights Act 1996 - one week per complete year of service from two years, up to twelve weeks. A contract can require longer notice on either side, and the longer period applies. Other countries have their own minimums, and some count notice from the start of the next month or week. Enter the period that applies to you.

Limitations: what the result does not prove

  • It is not legal advice. It does not decide whether notice was validly given, which period applies, or what happens if notice is short.
  • Public holidays are the ones you list; the calculator has no built-in holiday calendar because they differ by country, region and year.
  • Some contracts count notice from the next pay period, week or month start. Enter the date notice takes effect in that case.
  • Garden leave and pay in lieu of notice change what you do during notice, not usually when it ends; neither is modelled.

Frequently asked questions

Does a notice period start on the day I resign?

In the UK, GOV.UK says a notice period usually runs from the start of the day after you hand in your notice. Some contracts say otherwise. The calculator counts from the next day by default; untick the box if your contract counts the day of resignation.

What is one month's notice from the 31st?

The corresponding date in the next month, or its last day if it has fewer days. Notice given on 31 January 2026 with a month's notice ends on 28 February 2026, and notice given on 30 April ends on 30 May.

Do weekends and bank holidays count in a notice period?

In a notice period expressed in days, weeks or months, yes - every calendar day counts. Only a period written as working or business days skips them. Choose 'Working days' and list the holidays if that is your wording.

What is the statutory minimum notice my employer must give me in the UK?

One week if you have worked there for at least a month but less than two years, then one week for each complete year of service, up to twelve weeks after twelve years. Open the UK statutory section to work it out from your service.

Can my last day of notice fall on a weekend?

Yes. Employment normally continues to the end of the notice period, so your employment ends that day even if you last work on the Friday. Some policies move the end to a working day; the calculator can show either.

Can I add my last working day to my calendar?

Yes. The Add to calendar button creates a standard iCalendar file with an all-day event on the last day of notice, which Google Calendar, Outlook and Apple Calendar can import. It is generated in your browser.
