Calendar days, weekdays, working days, business days
Four terms that get used as though they mean the same thing. They do not, and the differences decide deadlines.
| Term | What it counts |
|---|---|
| Calendar days | Every day, including weekends and holidays. |
| Weekdays | Monday to Friday. Holidays still counted. |
| Working days | Weekdays minus public holidays. |
| Business days | The same as working days. A regional preference in wording, not a different measure. |
Because working days and business days mean the same thing, this page and our business days calculator are the same tool. Two names exist because two phrases are in common use, and somebody searching for one should not have to guess at the other.
When the working week is not Monday to Friday
Plenty of businesses do not work a five-day Monday-to-Friday week. Retail and hospitality often treat Saturday as an ordinary working day. In much of the Middle East the weekend is Friday and Saturday, and offices open on Sunday. The checkboxes above let you mark Saturday or Sunday as working, and the count adjusts.
Working days and public holidays
A public holiday only reduces the count when it falls on a day you would otherwise work. A holiday on a Sunday changes nothing if Sunday is already a non-working day - and this calculator will not subtract it twice, which is the usual error when the sum is done by hand.
The holidays used are national. Regional days - a German Land, a Swiss canton, a Spanish community, a US state - vary too much to claim as covered, so they are not. Add them yourself in the custom holidays box, which is also where a company shutdown between Christmas and New Year belongs.
Frequently asked questions
How many working days are there in a month?
Between 19 and 23, depending on the month, how the weekends fall and how many holidays land midweek. A 30-day month typically has 21 or 22 working days.
Do working days include public holidays?
No. That is the difference between a working day and a weekday.
Is the start date counted?
Only if you want it to be. Both ends can be included or excluded independently, because contracts differ on this and the wrong assumption shifts every answer by a day. "Within 10 working days of receipt" usually starts counting the day after receipt.
