1 The job

Try:

2 Your evidence

Pick what the advert asks for, then say what you did and what changed - with a number if you can. These sentences are yours; the builder only links them.

3 You and the style

Automatic uses "Yours sincerely" when you name the reader, "Kind regards" when you do not.

4 Your letter

Fill in the job and at least one piece of evidence, or load the example.

What the Cover Letter Builder does

This builder puts together a cover letter from your own evidence. You pick up to three things the job advert asks for and write, in your words, what you did and what changed. The builder adds the standard parts around them - your contact block, the date, a salutation, an opening that names the role and company, a close with your availability and a sign-off - and then checks the result: length, sentences that all start with 'I', stock phrases, achievements without numbers, whether you have said anything specific about the company, and which of the advert's required terms you mention.

Nothing is written for you by AI. The connecting sentences are fixed templates shown on this page, and every claim in the letter is one you typed. You can copy the letter, print it, or download it as a Word .docx or plain text file, all made in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Enter the role, the company, the hiring manager's name if you know it, and where you saw the job.
  2. For each of up to three requirements from the advert, write what you did and what changed. A number makes it checkable.
  3. Add an optional first line, a specific reason for wanting to work there, and your availability or notice period.
  4. Fill in your name and contact details, choose a formal or warm tone and a sign-off, and optionally paste the advert to check its required terms.
  5. Press Build letter, read the checks, edit your own sentences until they pass, then copy or download.

Reading the results

The word count covers the body only - not the address blocks - and the 250-400 word range is a common guideline for a letter that fits on one page with room to breathe.

Stock phrases such as 'team player' or 'perfect candidate' are flagged because they claim a quality without showing it. Replace them with what you did.

The company check looks only at your own sentences, because the opening and close always name the company. If you never mention it yourself, the letter could be sent anywhere.

Worked example: a data analyst writing to a retailer

Priya applies for a Data Analyst role at Fabrikam Retail, writing to a named manager, so the sign-off becomes 'Yours sincerely'. Her three pieces of evidence cover SQL and data modelling (models across 1.2 million transactions a month, 120 metric definitions), dashboards (used weekly by 40 managers, six hours a week saved) and experimentation (an A/B test that lifted sign-ups by 9%).

Her reason for Fabrikam names its move to regional pricing, so the company check passes. Every achievement has a number. Checked against the sample advert, the letter mentions most of the required terms - including SQL, data modelling, Tableau, Python and stakeholders - and lists the rest, such as Power BI, to address only if true.

The fixed phrases

Formal opening: 'I am writing to apply for the [role] position at [company], as advertised on [source].' Warm opening: 'I'd like to apply for the [role] role at [company], which I saw on [source].' Each evidence paragraph starts 'You are looking for [requirement].' followed by your sentence. The close is 'I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how I could contribute to [company].' plus your availability and a thank-you. That is all the builder writes.

The sign-off follows the British convention by default: 'Yours sincerely' when you address a named person and 'Kind regards' otherwise. Choose another sign-off if your field or country expects it.

Limitations: what the result does not prove

  • It cannot judge whether your evidence is strong or relevant - only whether it is there, specific and measurable.
  • The templates are plain and conventional. Rewrite any of them in the copied text if they do not sound like you.
  • Checks against a job description use exact terms and spelling variants; a skill described in other words will be listed as not mentioned.
  • Some employers ask specific questions instead of a free cover letter. Answer those directly.

Privacy: where your data goes

Frequently asked questions

How long should a cover letter be?

Usually 250-400 words in the body: three to five short paragraphs that fit on one page. Long enough for two or three concrete examples, short enough to be read in about a minute. The builder shows the count and flags letters outside that range.

What should a cover letter include?

The role you are applying for, two or three pieces of evidence that match the advert's requirements, a specific reason you want to work for this employer, and your availability. Contact details and a polite close complete it. The builder has a field for each.

Is this an AI cover letter generator?

No. It does not write your content. You write the evidence and the reason for applying; the builder adds fixed linking sentences, lays the letter out and checks it. That keeps every claim true and in your own voice.

Who should I address a cover letter to if I don't know the name?

Try the advert, the company website or a professional networking profile for the hiring manager. If you still cannot find a name, 'Dear Hiring Manager' is a safe modern choice; avoid 'To whom it may concern', which the checker flags as dated.

Should I sign off with 'Yours sincerely' or 'Kind regards'?

In British usage 'Yours sincerely' goes with a named reader and 'Yours faithfully' with 'Dear Sir or Madam'; 'Kind regards' is a friendly modern alternative. In the US 'Sincerely' is common. The builder picks one automatically and lets you choose.

Can I download my cover letter as a Word document?

Yes. Download .docx creates a standard Word file with one paragraph per section, made in your browser - nothing is uploaded. You can also copy the plain text into an application form or download a .txt file.
