Spotify Follow Button Widget
Send fans to your music or podcast on Spotify with a bright, recognisable button. Paste the Share link from Spotify and the wording follows what it points to: Follow on Spotify for an artist or profile, Listen to the podcast for a show, Listen on Spotify for a playlist.

Works with
How it works
Spotify's Share > Copy link gives addresses such as open.spotify.com/artist/ followed by a 22-character ID, often with an ?si= tracking code and sometimes a language prefix like /intl-de/. The button accepts artist, show (podcast), playlist and user pages - the things a listener can follow or save - removes the tracking code and language prefix, and links to https://open.spotify.com/<type>/<id>. Spotify URIs copied from the desktop app (spotify:artist:...) are converted too. Single tracks and albums are refused with a short note, because there is nothing to follow on them; use an artist or playlist link instead. The label is chosen from the type unless you write your own.
Method
- Accepted: https://open.spotify.com/(intl-xx/)?(artist|show|playlist)/<22 letters and digits>, /user/<1-64 [A-Za-z0-9._-]>, spotify:<type>:<id>
- Built: https://open.spotify.com/<type>/<id> (query string and intl prefix removed)
- Label: artist/user -> Follow on Spotify; show -> Listen to the podcast; playlist -> Listen on Spotify
Worked examples
A show link from the app
Inputs: https://open.spotify.com/intl-de/show/0a1B2c3D4e5F6g7H8i9J0k?si=abc123
Result: Listen to the podcast -> https://open.spotify.com/show/0a1B2c3D4e5F6g7H8i9J0k
The language prefix and si tracking code are removed; the label matches a show.
A track
Inputs: https://open.spotify.com/track/0a1B2c3D4e5F6g7H8i9J0k
Result: Refused with a note to link an artist, show, playlist or profile
A single track cannot be followed.
Limitations
- Opens Spotify; it cannot follow or save on the visitor's behalf.
- No follower or listener numbers - they need Spotify's Web API and a server.
- Tracks, albums and episodes are not accepted; link the artist, show or playlist.
Where publishers use it
- A band's website putting Follow on Spotify next to tour dates
- A podcast's show-notes page with Listen to the podcast under every episode summary
- A cafe sharing its in-store playlist with a Listen on Spotify button on the About page
Questions
Will clicking follow the artist automatically?
No. Spotify does not offer a link that follows on the visitor's behalf - the official follow button needed an embed. The button opens your page in the Spotify app or web player, where the visitor taps Follow.
Why was my track link refused?
A track or album has nothing to follow, and sending fans to a single song is better done with Spotify's embed player. Use your artist page or a playlist; for a podcast, use the show page rather than one episode.
Does it show monthly listeners or follower numbers?
No. Those figures come from Spotify's Web API with an app token on a server, and they change constantly. The button shows your subtitle instead, such as the show's name.
Does it work for podcasts hosted outside Spotify?
Yes, as long as Spotify lists the show. Podcasts distributed from Buzzsprout, Libsyn, Podbean, RSS.com or Spotify for Creators all get an open.spotify.com/show page once they are approved. Artist profiles appear after a distributor such as DistroKid, CD Baby or TuneCore delivers your first release, and you can claim them in Spotify for Artists.
Is the si= part of my link needed?
No. It is Spotify's share-tracking code. The button removes it so the link is clean and the same for every visitor.
