Pros and Cons Box Widget

Summarise the good and the bad of a product, plan or decision in two clean columns - ticks for pros, crosses for cons - with your own headings, an optional title and a bottom-line verdict, styled as one card, two cards or a minimal list that stacks neatly on phones.

How it works

Type the pros in one box and the cons in the other, one point per line. Bullet characters you paste from a document (-, *, +, the round bullet, or 1. and 2)) are stripped, blank lines and exact repeats are dropped, and each list keeps up to 20 points of up to 300 characters. Headings default to Pros and Cons but can be anything - What we liked and What could be better, Advantages and Trade-offs - and each list is named by its heading for screen readers, so the meaning never rests on green and red alone. Ticks and crosses are small SVG drawings hidden from assistive technology. The card style puts both lists in one card with lightly tinted halves; split gives each list its own card with a coloured top edge; minimal drops the surfaces for pages that already have a strong design. The columns sit side by side once the box is at least 520 px wide and stack below that, pros first. A verdict line, labelled Bottom line by default, closes the box.

Method

  • One item per line; leading -, *, +, bullet, en dash or 1. / 1) removed; blanks and case-insensitive repeats dropped
  • Up to 20 items per list, 300 characters per item; text only, never markup
  • Two columns from 520 px of box width, one column below
  • Colours: pros #067647 / cons #b42318 on light, #4ade80 / #fca5a5 on dark

Worked examples

A list pasted from a document

Inputs: pros lines: '- Light', '* Light', a blank line, '2. Cheap', '- Quiet'

Result: Pros: Light, Cheap, Quiet

Bullets and numbering are stripped, the blank line and the repeated Light are dropped.

Custom headings

Inputs: proslabel = What we liked, conslabel = Worth knowing

Result: Two columns headed What we liked and Worth knowing, each list named by its heading

Headings replace Pros and Cons everywhere, including the list labels screen readers hear.

Limitations

  • Plain text only - no bold, links or images inside items.
  • Up to 20 items per side.
  • Adds no structured data; use your SEO plugin's review markup if your page qualifies.

Where publishers use it

  • A tech blogger closing a laptop review with a scannable pros and cons summary above the comments
  • A comparison site placing one box per product so readers can skim trade-offs before the detailed sections
  • A financial or legal explainer weighing the advantages and drawbacks of two options, such as leasing and buying
  • A travel writer summarising a hotel stay with What we loved and Worth knowing headings

Questions

Does a pros and cons box help with Google rich results?

Google can read pros and cons in Product review structured data for editorial product reviews, but that markup belongs to your page's own review snippet, written by you and matching the visible text. This box adds no structured data so that it never conflicts with what your CMS or SEO plugin already outputs; add the positiveNotes and negativeNotes properties there if your page qualifies.

Can I paste a bulleted list from Word or Google Docs?

Yes. Each line becomes one item, and the common bullet characters and numbering at the start of a line are removed, so a pasted list does not end up with double bullets. Styling such as bold or links is not carried over: the box shows plain text.

How do screen readers announce the two lists?

Each list is labelled by its visible heading - for example Pros, 4 items - and every item is read as plain text. The tick and cross drawings are hidden from assistive technology, and the headings carry the meaning, so nothing depends on colour.
