What an AAAA record is
The AAAA record is IPv6's counterpart to the A record - a hostname mapped to a 128-bit IPv6 address rather than a 32-bit IPv4 one. The doubled letter is deliberate: "quad-A", four times the bits of an A record.
Why a domain might have no AAAA record
Not every server has an IPv6 address configured, and that is not an error - a domain with only an A record simply is not reachable over IPv6 yet. A client that supports both protocols will prefer IPv6 when an AAAA record exists (Happy Eyeballs), and fall back to IPv4 otherwise.
Checking IPv6 rollout
This is the quickest way to confirm whether a change to a site's IPv6 configuration has actually taken effect, without needing IPv6 connectivity yourself to test it.
