Western sign boundaries shift by a day in some years, since a year is not an exact number of days - a date right on the edge shows both bordering signs. The Chinese zodiac year does not start on 1 January, so a birthday in January or early February can belong to the previous year's animal.

Two systems, from one date

Enter a date of birth and this returns both the Western zodiac sign, based on where the sun was along the ecliptic on that date, and the Chinese zodiac animal, based on the lunar year the date falls in - two independent traditions that are often confused for one another.

Western sign boundaries

Western sign dates are not identical every year - the boundary between two signs can shift by a day depending on the year, because the tropical year is not an exact number of days. This uses the commonly published boundary dates, and shows which two signs border a date that falls right on the edge.

The Chinese zodiac is a year, not a date range

The Chinese zodiac assigns a whole lunar year to one of twelve animals in a repeating cycle, and the lunar new year does not fall on 1 January - it moves between late January and mid-February. A birthday in early January or February can belong to the previous year's animal rather than the calendar year it looks like it belongs to. This is accounted for using the actual Chinese New Year date for the relevant year, not a fixed 1 January cutoff.
