What the Shoe Size Converter does
This converter turns a shoe size from one system into the others - UK, India, US, EU and Japanese (centimetres) - for men, women and children, or works out your size from the length of your foot. It also shows the full chart for the group you picked, with your size highlighted, ready to print or download.
Every conversion goes through foot length, which is what all the systems are ultimately based on. The adult formulas are the ones published in ISO/TS 19407 (now ISO 19407:2023, which itself calls its adult tables a guideline): UK = 3 × foot length (mm) ÷ 25.4 − 23 and EU = 0.15 × foot length (mm) + 2. India uses UK sizes. Brands build shoes on their own lasts, so the same number can fit differently from one maker to the next; treat the result as the size to try first, not a guarantee.
How to use it
- Choose Men, Women or Kids. Men's and women's charts use the same UK and EU numbers; only the US scale changes.
- To convert a size, pick the system it is in - UK, India, US, EU or Japan - and type the size, such as 8, 8.5 or 8½. For children, say whether it is on the child scale (up to 13½) or the older-child scale, which uses adult numbers from 1.
- To find your size from your foot, choose "My foot length" and enter the length from heel to the tip of your longest toe, in centimetres or inches.
- Read your size in every system. The table below shows the whole chart with your row highlighted; copy the sizes, download the chart as CSV or print it.
Reading the results
UK and India sizes are the same numbers. US men's sizes are one more than UK (UK 8 = US 9), and US women's sizes are shown as two more (UK 5 = US 7); some brands use one and a half or two and a half instead.
EU sizes step in Paris points of two-thirds of a centimetre, while UK and US half sizes step in sixths of an inch (4.23 mm). The scales do not line up exactly, so a converted EU size is rounded to the nearest half; brands that sell in EU thirds (40⅔) sit between two rows.
Japanese sizes, and the international Mondopoint system in ISO 9407, are simply the foot length in centimetres or millimetres. That is the most reliable number to compare with a brand's own size guide.
Worked example: a man's UK 8 and a measured foot
UK 8 corresponds to a foot length of (8 + 23) × 25.4 ÷ 3 = 262.5 mm. The EU size is 0.15 × 262.5 + 2 = 41.37, which rounds to 41½ (most shops would show 41 or 42). US men's is 8 + 1 = 9, India is 8, and the Japanese size is 26 cm after rounding to the half centimetre.
Someone who measures their foot at 26.5 cm has an exact UK figure of 3 × 265 ÷ 25.4 − 23 = 8.30. That is between UK 8 and UK 8½, so the converter suggests trying 8½ (US men's 9½, EU 41.75 → 42), and checking the brand's chart for the foot length it gives for each size.
Formulas and scoring rules
- UK adult (and India)

How to measure your foot properly
Put a sheet of paper on a hard floor against a wall. Stand on it with your heel touching the wall and your weight on that foot, and mark the tip of your longest toe - not always the big toe. Measure from the wall to the mark. Do both feet, because they are often slightly different, and use the longer one. Feet swell during the day, so measure in the afternoon or evening and wear the kind of socks you will wear with the shoes.
Why brands do not agree
Shoe sizes were never fully standardised. The UK and US scales grew out of the barleycorn, the EU scale out of the French Paris point, and each maker fits its lasts to its own idea of a typical foot and a style's toe room. ISO 19407 exists precisely to give a common conversion, and even it describes the adult tables as guidance. A running shoe, a dress shoe and a boot of the same marked size can therefore feel different. Where a brand publishes foot lengths for its sizes, compare your measured length with those directly.
In India the UK numbering is used on shoes, and the Bureau of Indian Standards' footwear sizing standard IS 1638 dates from 1969. A CLRI-led nationwide foot survey to create an Indian sizing scheme has been reported; this converter does not model it.
Limitations: what the result does not prove
- Width is not covered. Many brands offer narrow, standard and wide fittings, and Mondopoint can add a width in millimetres; a correct length in the wrong width still fits badly.
- The chart is compiled from conversion formulas, not from any brand's own chart, and brands differ by half a size or more.
- It does not cover sizing for specialist footwear such as ski boots, cycling shoes or orthopaedic shoes, which follow their own charts.
- For children, the result is today's size only. Allow growing room and remeasure often; this is not medical advice about foot development.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Indian shoe size the same as UK?
Yes. Shoes sold in India are marked in UK sizes, so India 8 is UK 8, which is US men's 9 and about EU 41 to 42. The converter shows India alongside UK for that reason. Check the brand's chart for the foot length, because makers' lasts differ.
How do I convert UK to US shoe size?
For men, add one: UK 8 is US 9. For women, add two on most charts: UK 5 is US 7, although some brands add one and a half or two and a half. Children's US sizes are usually about half a size above UK.
What is EU 42 in UK and India sizes?
About UK 8, which is also India 8. EU 42 corresponds to a foot of roughly 26.7 cm, which works out at UK 8.5 by the ISO conversion formula; many brands label it UK 8, so try both if you can.
How do I find my shoe size from foot length?
Measure from heel to the tip of your longest toe in cm, then use UK = 3 × length in mm ÷ 25.4 − 23, or type it into the converter. A 26 cm foot gives UK 7.7, between UK 7½ and 8; most people take the larger size.
Are men's and women's EU sizes the same?
Yes. EU and UK sizes use one scale for everyone, so a women's EU 39 and a men's EU 39 are meant for the same foot length. Only US sizes have separate men's and women's numbers: for the same foot, the women's US size is usually 1 to 1.5 higher than the men's (this chart uses 1).
What size is a Japanese 26 shoe?
Japanese sizes are the foot length in centimetres, so a 26 is for a 26 cm foot. That is about UK 7½, US men's 8½ and EU 41. Mondopoint (ISO 9407) uses the same idea in millimetres, for example 260.
How do children's shoe sizes work?
The UK child scale starts small and runs up to 13½, then restarts at 1 using the adult numbers for older children. So a child who outgrows a 13½ moves to a 1, not a 14. The kids' chart here covers child 3 to 13½ and youth 1 to 6.
