Finding an hour that works everywhere
Add the cities your colleagues are in and this shows the same hour in each of them, side by side, marking which hours are inside normal working time and which are not. The overlap - the hours that are reasonable for everyone - is highlighted, so the choice is obvious rather than arithmetic.
Why time zone maths goes wrong
Three reasons, all of them handled here by asking your browser rather than by assuming.
- Daylight saving does not move together. Europe and the United States change clocks on different dates, so for a couple of weeks each spring and autumn the gap between London and New York is four hours rather than the usual five. Meetings booked on the usual offset get missed.
- Not everywhere observes it. India, Japan, most of Africa, Arizona and Queensland do not. An offset that holds in January may not hold in July.
- Offsets are not all whole hours. India is UTC+5:30, Nepal UTC+5:45, parts of Australia UTC+9:30. Rounding to the nearest hour puts a meeting half an hour out.
Rather than carry a table of offsets that would go stale, this planner uses the time zone database built into your browser. It knows the current rules, including daylight saving, for every zone it lists.
Working hours, and what counts as reasonable
Hours between 09:00 and 17:00 locally are shown as working hours. 07:00 to 09:00 and 17:00 to 20:00 are marked as awkward but possible - early or late, not unreasonable. Anything outside that is marked as out of hours, and if the only overlap is out of hours for somebody, that is worth knowing before the invitation goes out rather than after.
Where a span crosses midnight the date is shown alongside the time, because "3pm Tuesday for you is 6am Wednesday for them" is exactly the detail that gets lost.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best time for a meeting between the US and Europe?
Early afternoon UK time is usually the widest overlap: 14:00 in London is 09:00 in New York and 06:00 on the US west coast. Add both cities above and the overlap is highlighted for the date you pick.
What about the US and India?
The overlap is narrow. Morning US eastern time is evening in India - 08:00 in New York is 18:30 in Mumbai. Anything later in the US day is night in India.
Does it account for daylight saving?
Yes, for the date you choose rather than for today. If your meeting is after a clock change, the times shown are the ones that will apply then.
Can I plan a meeting for a future date?
Yes - change the date and every conversion updates, using the rules in force on that date.
