What the Research Question Builder does
This research question builder helps you frame a focused question with the PICO, PICOT, PEO or SPIDER framework. You fill in each element in your own words, and it assembles several question variants, a Boolean search string for databases such as PubMed, ERIC or Scopus, and a FINER checklist to judge whether the question is worth pursuing.
The question variants come from fixed sentence templates filled with your terms - nothing is generated by AI - and everything stays in your browser.
How to use it
- Choose a framework. PICO and PICOT suit questions about interventions; PEO suits exposures and experiences; SPIDER suits qualitative and mixed-methods reviews.
- Fill in each element. Put your main term first, then synonyms separated by semicolons: "university students; undergraduates".
- Read the question variants and pick the one closest to what you mean, then edit it so it reads naturally and names the exact outcome you will measure.
- Copy the search string into a database. Each element becomes a bracketed group of synonyms joined by OR, and the groups are joined by AND.
- Tick the FINER criteria you can honestly defend, and take the unticked ones to your supervisor.
Reading the results
A good question names who, what and what outcome precisely enough that two people would search and screen the same way. If a variant sounds vague, the element behind it is usually too broad.
Comparison, time frame, design and research type are shown in the question but left out of the search string: searching for them too early tends to miss relevant studies, so they are normally applied during screening.
The FINER score is your own judgement recorded as a checklist, not a calculated quality rating.
Worked example: a PICOT question about quizzes
A lecturer enters: Population "first-year undergraduates; university students", Intervention "weekly retrieval quizzes; practice testing; retrieval practice", Comparison "re-reading", Outcome "final exam scores; academic achievement", Time "one semester".
The first variant reads: In first-year undergraduates, does weekly retrieval quizzes, compared with re-reading, change final exam scores over one semester? She edits it to "do weekly retrieval quizzes, compared with re-reading, improve final exam scores over one semester?"
The search string is ("first-year undergraduates" OR "university students") AND ("weekly retrieval quizzes" OR "practice testing" OR "retrieval practice") AND ("final exam scores" OR "academic achievement"), with re-reading and the time frame left for screening.
Which framework fits my question?
PICO was introduced for clinical questions about treatments and is now used for any intervention question; PICOT adds the time over which the outcome is measured. PEO (population, exposure, outcome) fits questions about associations and lived experience where nothing is being tested.
SPIDER (sample, phenomenon of interest, design, evaluation, research type) was designed by Cooke, Smith and Booth in 2012 to make qualitative evidence easier to find. It is more specific than PICO, so it retrieves fewer irrelevant records but can miss some relevant ones; many reviewers run both.
Limitations: what the result does not prove
- The templates produce grammatical skeletons. Your terms may need small edits (a verb agreement, an article) before the question reads well.
- The search string is a starting point. Each database has its own syntax, subject headings (MeSH in PubMed, the ERIC Thesaurus) and field tags, which a librarian can help you add.
- A framework structures a question; it cannot tell you whether the question is new. Check existing reviews before committing.
- FINER is a set of prompts, not a scoring system with thresholds.

Frequently asked questions
What is a PICO question?
A PICO question names the Population, the Intervention, the Comparison and the Outcome, for example: in adults with type 2 diabetes, does a self-management app, compared with usual care, lower HbA1c? The structure keeps the question focused and searchable.
When should I use SPIDER instead of PICO?
Use SPIDER for qualitative or mixed-methods questions about experiences, views and meanings, where there is no intervention or comparison. It adds the study design and research type, which helps find interview and focus-group studies.
What does FINER stand for?
Feasible, Interesting, Novel, Ethical and Relevant. Hulley and colleagues proposed it in Designing Clinical Research as a check that a question is answerable with your resources and worth answering.
How do I combine synonyms in a database search?
Join synonyms for the same idea with OR inside brackets, then join the different ideas with AND. Quote phrases so they are searched as phrases, and use an asterisk for truncation where the database supports it.
Can a research question have more than one outcome?
Yes, but name a primary outcome. Several equal outcomes make the question harder to answer, the search broader and the sample size harder to justify; secondary outcomes can be listed separately.
