What the Literature Review Matrix Builder does
This tool builds a literature review synthesis matrix: your sources as rows, the columns you choose - aim, method, sample, findings, limitations or anything else - and a themes field for tags. As you fill it in, it counts how many sources support each theme, shows which columns are still empty, and exports the grid as CSV or JSON or prints it.
It is a structured place for your own reading notes, not a summariser: every cell contains what you typed, nothing is generated, and nothing leaves your browser unless you download it. Saving between visits is opt-in and stays in this browser.
How to use it
- List your sources, one per line as Author (Year) Title, or paste a BibTeX or RIS export from your reference manager.
- Set your columns, one per line. Start with the questions your review needs to answer; you can add or remove columns later without losing notes.
- Choose Build matrix, then fill in each source's cells as you read. Put comma-separated themes in the Themes field - retrieval practice, spacing, small sample - to track patterns across sources.
- Watch the theme coverage and completeness bars. Filter by a word or a theme to see only the sources that discuss it, and open the grid view for the whole matrix at a glance.
- Download the CSV for a spreadsheet or appendix, or tick Remember this matrix to keep it in this browser between sessions.
Reading the results
Theme coverage counts how many sources you have tagged with each theme. A theme supported by many sources is a candidate for a main section of your review; a theme resting on one source is flagged as tentative.
Column completeness shows which parts of your notes are thin. If Limitations is filled for only two sources out of twelve, your critical appraisal will be uneven.
The matrix is a thinking tool: reading across a row describes one study, reading down a column compares studies on one dimension - which is where synthesis, rather than a list of summaries, comes from.
Worked example: four sources on retrieval practice and spacing
The example matrix holds four well-known studies of learning techniques with five columns: aim, method, sample, key findings and limitations. Each source has been tagged with its themes.
Theme coverage counts retrieval practice in 3 of the 4 sources (Roediger and Karpicke 2006, Karpicke and Blunt 2011, Dunlosky et al. 2013), spacing and delay in 2 each, and concept mapping, laboratory, meta-analysis and review in 1 each - so those last four are flagged as resting on a single source.
Column completeness shows Limitations filled for 2 of 4 sources (50%) while every other column is 4 of 4, which points to the notes that still need work before the synthesis is written.
Choosing good columns
Columns should follow your review question. For an intervention question, participants, intervention, comparison, outcomes and design mirror the PICO framework; for a qualitative review, setting, participants, phenomenon, method and key themes work better. Keep a limitations or quality column in every matrix - it is the column most often left empty and the one examiners look for.
Short, comparable phrases in each cell make the columns readable; save long quotations for your reference manager's notes.
Limitations: what the result does not prove
- The tool does not read or summarise papers. Every entry is yours, so its quality depends on your notes.
- Theme counts are counts of your tags, not a measure of evidence strength. Five weak studies do not outweigh one strong one; judge quality separately.
- Up to 300 sources and 20 columns; larger reviews are better split by theme or managed in dedicated systematic-review software.
- Remembering the matrix uses this browser's local storage. Clearing browser data or switching device loses it, so download the CSV or JSON as a backup.
Privacy: where your data goes
Everything you paste, type or drop is processed in this browser tab. It is not uploaded, logged, stored or sent to analytics. Session recording and tag-manager scripts are switched off on this page.

What is a literature review matrix?
It is a table with one row per source and one column per aspect you want to compare, such as aims, methods, samples and findings. Filling it in makes similarities, contradictions and gaps across studies visible, which is the heart of synthesis.
What columns should a synthesis matrix have?
Use columns that answer your review question. A common starting set is aim, design, sample, main findings and limitations, plus themes. Add columns for your own variables, such as country, age group or outcome measure.
Can I import sources from Zotero or Mendeley?
Yes. Export the collection as BibTeX or RIS and paste it into the sources box; authors, year and title are read automatically and the source is labelled in author-year form.
Is my matrix saved?
Only if you tick Remember this matrix, and then only in this browser's local storage on this device. Nothing is uploaded. Untick the box to erase it, and download CSV or JSON for a permanent copy.
How is a synthesis matrix different from an annotated bibliography?
An annotated bibliography describes sources one at a time. A matrix lines them up against the same questions, so you can write about patterns across studies - which is what markers mean by synthesis.
Can I use the matrix in my dissertation appendix?
Yes. Download the CSV, open it in a spreadsheet, adjust column widths and include it as a table. Many supervisors find a summary matrix a useful appendix to a literature review chapter.
