What the Academic Reading Time Calculator does

This reading time calculator estimates how long a reading list will take from its length in pages or words, how difficult each item is, and why you are reading it - skimming, reading to understand or studying closely with notes - and then spreads the total across the days you have.

It starts from a published average silent reading speed for English non-fiction, 238 words per minute, and applies difficulty and purpose factors that are shown on the page. Replace the speed with your own measured rate for a personal estimate; everything is calculated in your browser.

How to use it

  1. List each item on its own line: a title, then its length as pages or words, then easy, moderate or dense, separated by vertical bars.
  2. Choose the words-per-page preset that matches your material if you gave lengths in pages.
  3. Pick your purpose. Skimming for the argument is quicker than the base speed; studying closely with notes takes about twice as long as ordinary reading.
  4. For a personal figure, time yourself reading one typical page, divide its words by the minutes, and enter that as the base speed.
  5. Enter the number of days you have and choose Estimate to see the total, the time per item and a day-by-day plan.

Reading the results

Effective speed is the base speed multiplied by the difficulty factor (easy 1.0, moderate 0.8, dense 0.6) and the purpose factor (skim 1.5, understand 1.0, study 0.5). These factors are A2Z planning assumptions, not measured constants.

The daily plan divides the total evenly and splits long items across days where needed, marked as part. Reading in shorter daily blocks is usually easier to sustain than one long session.

If the daily figure looks impossible, the answer is usually to change purpose - skim the background reading and save close study for the core texts - rather than to read faster.

Worked example: a week's module reading

A student has a 32-page textbook chapter (moderate), an 8,000-word seminar article (dense), a 6-page lecture handout (easy) and a 12-page methods paper (dense), reading to understand, 500 words per page, over five days.

The chapter is 16,000 words at 238 x 0.8 = 190.4 words per minute, 84 minutes. The article is 8,000 words at 238 x 0.6 = 142.8 wpm, 56 minutes. The handout is 3,000 words at 238 wpm, 13 minutes. The methods paper is 6,000 words at 142.8 wpm, 42 minutes.

The total is about 195 minutes - 3 hours 15 minutes - or roughly 39 minutes a day over five days. Studying everything closely with notes would double it to about 6 hours 30 minutes.

Limitations: what the result does not prove

  • Reading speed varies widely between people, languages and texts. The default is a population average for English non-fiction; your own timed rate is far more accurate.
  • The difficulty and purpose factors are rules of thumb for planning, not research findings. Adjust the base speed if the estimates do not match your experience.
  • Words per page are typical values; a dense two-column page can hold much more, and a page with figures much less.
  • It does not include time for looking up references, re-reading, discussion or writing up notes afterwards.

How long does it take to read 50 pages?

At about 500 words per page that is 25,000 words. At 238 words per minute it takes about an hour and 45 minutes for easy text, longer for dense academic prose, and roughly twice as long if you are taking careful notes.

What is an average reading speed?

A 2019 review of 190 studies by Marc Brysbaert put average silent reading for adults at about 238 words per minute for English non-fiction and 260 for fiction, noticeably lower than figures often quoted online.

How do I measure my own reading speed?

Take a typical page of your course reading, count or estimate its words, time yourself reading it normally, and divide words by minutes. Repeat on a second page and use the average as the base speed.

Is speed reading worth learning for academic texts?

Research suggests that large speed gains usually come with lower comprehension. Skimming strategically - abstracts, headings, first sentences and conclusions - is a more reliable way to cut reading time.

Why does studying closely take twice as long?

Close study involves pausing, re-reading difficult passages and writing notes. The factor of 0.5 is a planning assumption that roughly doubles the time; change the base speed if your experience differs.
