Overtime pay calculator

Gross pay from ordinary and overtime hours, with the threshold and multiplier set by you rather than assumed.

1 · Your pay and hours

2 · Your overtime rules

Hours in the period before the premium applies.

1.5 is time-and-a-half; 2 is double time.

Arithmetic, not legal or payroll advice. Overtime rules differ by country, state or province, industry award, contract and worker classification. The US FLSA sets 1.5x beyond 40 hours for non-exempt employees and nothing for exempt ones; India's Factories Act specifies double; much of the EU regulates maximum hours instead. Check what applies to you and enter those numbers. This also shows gross pay — tax, insurance, pension and allowances are all outside it.

Everything is an input

The hourly rate, the hours worked, the threshold at which overtime starts and the multiplier are all yours to set. Extra premium bands can be added on top — double time beyond a further threshold, for instance.

That is deliberate. A calculator that hard-codes time-and-a-half after forty hours is quietly wrong for most of the world, and wrong in a way that looks authoritative.

Overtime rules are not universal

In the United States the federal FLSA sets 1.5x beyond forty hours a week for non-exempt employees — but exempt employees get none, and several states add daily thresholds on top. India's Factories Act specifies double the ordinary rate. Much of the European Union regulates maximum working hours rather than mandating a premium. Many workplaces are governed by a collective agreement or an individual contract that overrides the general rule either way.

This is an arithmetic tool, not legal or payroll advice. Check what applies to your country, your state, your industry and your contract, and use those numbers here.

Rounding is done once

Every figure is calculated at full precision and rounded only for display. Rounding each component and then adding them produces totals that are a penny out and do not reconcile with a payslip. Currencies without minor units, such as the yen, are never given decimals.

Example

45 hours at 20 an hour, with overtime beyond 40 at 1.5x: 40 ordinary hours give 800, five overtime hours at 30 give 150, and the gross is 950. The effective hourly rate across all hours is about 21.11.

What it does not include

This is gross pay for the hours entered. Tax, national insurance, pension contributions, shift allowances, holiday pay and salary sacrifice are all outside it, so the figure will not match a net payslip.
