Vehicle Depreciation Calculator Widget

Add a car depreciation calculator to your website. Owners and buyers enter the purchase price and a yearly depreciation rate - with an optional steeper first year - or a straight-line life and residual value, and see the estimated value at the end of each year.

Works with

How it works

The default is the declining-balance method: each year's value is the previous one times (1 - rate), so the car loses a fixed share of what is left rather than a fixed amount. Because new cars often lose more in the first year, an optional first-year rate replaces the normal rate for year one. The straight-line option, used in accounting, removes the same amount every year until the chosen residual value. The rate is the visitor's entry and the default figures are placeholders; the widget does not claim to know any make or model's resale value, and says so under every result.

Calculation method

  • Declining balance: value after n years = price x (1 - first-year rate) x (1 - rate)^(n - 1)
  • Without a separate first-year rate: price x (1 - rate)^n
  • Straight line: yearly depreciation = (price - residual value) / useful life; value never falls below the residual
  • Cumulative depreciation % = (price - value) / price x 100; values rounded to whole currency units

Worked examples

Declining balance with a steeper first year

Inputs: Price 30,000; 20% in year one, then 15% a year; 5 years

Result: 24,000 after year 1, 20,400 after year 2, 12,528 after year 5 (58.2% lost)

30,000 x 0.8 x 0.85^4 = 12,528.

Straight line for a business vehicle

Inputs: Price 30,000, residual 5,000, 10-year life

Result: 2,500 a year; 17,500 after 5 years

(30,000 - 5,000) / 10 = 2,500.

An estimate from the rate you enter, not a valuation. Actual resale value depends on the model, mileage, condition and market; tax depreciation follows its own rules.

Limitations

  • A constant-rate model: mileage, accidents, fuel-price shifts and model changes that move real resale prices are ignored.
  • Not a tax calculation; tax depreciation schedules and limits follow national rules the widget does not apply.

Where publishers use it

  • Used-car marketplaces and dealer blogs
  • Personal-finance articles on the true cost of car ownership
  • Small businesses estimating a vehicle's book value
  • Lease-versus-buy comparisons

Questions

What depreciation rate should I use?

One based on evidence for the car in question: compare asking or auction prices of the same model at one, two and three years old, or use a valuation guide for your market. The widget's defaults are only placeholders.

Which method is right?

Declining balance matches how car prices usually behave. Straight line is simpler and is common for business accounting; tax rules may prescribe a specific method.

Does mileage matter?

Yes, as do condition, service history and demand. This widget models only a steady rate.

Can the value reach zero?

With declining balance it never quite does. With straight line it stops at the residual value you enter.
